Dave has a very quick look impromptu look at the Australian Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Phase Array Feed Prototype receiver
Design of the Phase Array Feed:

NOTE: This is most definitely not up to my usual standard for content or quality, so don't expect much, it is what it is.

They don't, big signs up to turn off electronic gear. But it was maintenance during that time, so not operational.

Yes, I only realised this when I got back and edited the video. I knew it did this, but had completely forgotten.

There is a movie called "The Dish". As far as I know, this antenna was used as a relay station for live TV transmissions during Apollo 11. So it is a really historic installation. Nice to see it is still in use. The german relay station "Radom" used during the moonflights is now a museum...

It's an oldish Samsung WB2000. Have shot quite a few impromptu blogs with it, and the walk time rants.

I love that giant dish on that little building. It looks like the whole thing should just flop over when moving.

Thanks for the video! FYI, if you use a circular polarizer filter, you can minimize those reflections off the glass.

WOW, i went there about 2 years ago and it was amazing! Great to see this on the internet! Good job Dave :)

Dave - To eliminate (or greatly reduce) reflections in glass get yourself a polarizing filter. Amazing results. They typically freely rotate so that you can quickly minimize reflections. Polarizing filters also makes clouds really "pop" and deepen the blue sky, especially if you are pointing about 90 degrees from the sun. Search on eBay for "camera (polarizing, polarizer) filter"

Camera audio circuits have a compressor. The zoom switch produces a sharp click, the compressor brings audio level down to bring down click spike and the compressor release time keep voice down for a couple seconds.

I think you get 3D-glasses with circular polarization as well (left-hand and right-hand). And AFAIK, the polarization filters for cameras are linear but have an extra conversion step to circular otherwise the auto-focus wouldn't work.

I'm a pretty big space buff, yes.

Yeah, wasn't allowed to bring my proper blogging camera on a family holiday when I'm not supposed to be "working"

I have a question: Does the transmission in a car the mechanical equivalent to a linear power supply? what is a PWM technique was applied to the clutch with a large spring to act as an 'inductor' along with a flywheel?

I thought it was hydraulic, but a little research found the PDF which states that the drive power is 4 15hp 480V DC motors, geared down at 40, 000:1.

Thank you for the video :-) I was glad I could see a bit of Australia, the weather here, in Poland, is not that pretty :-/ Thank you!

I lived in parkes for 5 years, this telescope is one of the reasons i love science

Glad to see you're not one of the smouldering out there Dave! Just one question... What's a dish like that cost and can you get good telly on it? Well thats two questions really.

I went on an internship at the Very Large Array. Amazing hardware technology! And the supercomputers to do the real-time correlation need a dedicated power line!

They also have the Long Wavelength Array - which is much like the SKA but on a smaller scale, and for 10-80MHz...Still yet some amazing beamsteering tech. They make a realtime view of the RF sky at Awesome!

were those the legs of Mrs Jones we saw off to the side at one point

hydraulics ran by either heavy electric motors or industrial diesel engines running several hydraulic pumps that are hooked up to a few pretty large transmissions that run reduction gearing into some worm gears. something that large isn't a one size fits all thing, to make it work right without breaking parts all the time you have to pad it.
