The headlining upgrade on the new iPad Air is that it now includes Apple’s M1 chip - which gives it the exact same processor as the iPad Pros. Heck, I’m using a Mac Mini that’s powered by the exact same chip. Now, does that much power make much sense in an iPad? Right now, I’m not too sure. But, it does mean you should feel pretty safe for the next 4, 5 maybe even 6 years? They’ve also upgraded the front-facing camera to a 12MP ultrawide sensor with Center Stage, doubled the speed of the USB C port, and tossed in mid-band 5G support to round up the upgrades.

I feel like this iPad is a way to upsell you to the iPad pro. If the base model had 128GB it would steal most iPad pro buyers. Like you said if you want to upgrade then you probably already looking for the pro.
Edit: I just notice that the price of the 256GB WiFi iPad Air and pro now are almost the same since the price of the pro has dropped.

M1 and Pro features are going to be limited by only one usable storage option. Apple should have given storage options to 1tb, then this would have been a worthy alternative to the pro.

If this is the Starlight color, I’m a little bit disappointed that it isn’t more Cream and still too much Silver.

My Ipad Pro 2020 is still awesome with 256GB, i might consider this if they have a 128GB base model the 64GB is a shame in 2022! C’mon Apple
