Okey so here’s the explanation of this video: This is how many Germans act when they want to leave the party: clap their hands to their legs, stand up, say “so” and go. I’m Vietnamese and we don’t do that, so the first time I saw it, I found it very interesting and decided to make a video about it

MY DAD EVERY TIME HE LEAVES SOMEWHERE, I SWEAR THIS IS TOO ACCURATE

Being a german introvert i really love this type of nonverbal communication. You put your hands on your legs, say some short word like "So", "Okay" or "Gut" and everyone just understands without further explanation. Same with getting up in public transportation. You don't talk to the stranger next to you - you just visibly grab you bags and stuff and say "Thank you" when the other person gets up to let you pass. I love that.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 My family came from Germany to Wisconsin and we still do this!!! No one’s really leaving until someone slaps their lap and says ‘Welp.’ And then everyone files out of the house/event and spends another 45 minutes standing around our cars/driveways talking. 😂😂😂😂❤❤

It's the start of the Midwest goodbye
Step one: get up
Step two: spend the rest of the night saying goodbye

That’s like we do in the Midwest in the US except we say “whelp”. You can also do it if someone is staying over for too long and they will also leave

I'm Swissgerman and I didn't even realize we all did this until I saw your video 😂 Now I notice it every time.

Contrast with our kindly Greek uncle who always startled everyone with his polite but a bit abrupt, “Well goodnight!” And he truly would be in his coat and car started in 3 seconds. We all (especially the other Greeks) would blink in startlement, giggle and say farewell, never quite getting used to it!

It’s to get attention, and signify the day is over. It’s like clapping/wiping your hands after a task is completed, or snapping your finger when you have a good idea. Just kinda happens.

the midwest goodbye is slapping your knees and saying "welp" then you talk for another 10-30 minutes and they leave lol

The joke is that her boyfriend always has to tap his lap to announce that he's leaving (my dad does the same)

Half the time I just do the good ol’ Irish goodbye, telling people I need to get something from my car and then just leaving lol

I never knew there are so many small everyday aspects of German culture that I really like until I got recommended your videos. Love finding out more about cultures outside of my own :)
