We've all heard the advice - "rewrite your resume for EVERY job!" well, honestly - that sounds like a nightmare.

What if I told you that you could make minor adjustments to an existing document?? It's true!! Having a MAIN resume, basically a data dump of everything you've ever done - is easily edited in minutes to cover the important elements you want an employer to know about you.

In this week's AMA Amy busts the myth that you need to spend hours on a resume before applying - check it out!

Thank you for sharing your resume expertise with us. This has been an overwhelming process applying for jobs under the tailor your resume to the job description guidelines.

I know this might be a lot to ask, but, would you by any chance consider doing a video where you go through an example of how to start a resume, especially the formatting part without a template, and also how to tailor a resume through an example of highlighting a job description, then integrating one or two of those skills/requirements into the resume? I find your advice really helpful in my job searches, so thank you very much!! 😊 It’s just that I’m a visual person 😅

Just copy and paste the job description you see on the job add onto your resume within one or two of your previous roles, and fix it to fit the needs of the role you're applying for! That's pretty much it!! I don't taylor my resumes for all the jobs I apply for, since I have enough experience, skills and educations to fit 90% or higher of the jobs I apply for! But, if a potential employer isn't going to read my 3-5 page resumes, then I don't want to work there!! If I can read my resume very quickly in 20-30 seconds, all 3-5 pages, then they can do the same! I don't like lazy ass recruiters and hiring managers!

I loved that you covered this! My only question is what if the Responsibilities are from training but you don't have the work experience to back it up? I have been a Medical Secretary with work gaps, I took classes to refresh my knowledge in my work area and then hopped on to an opportunity to become a Medical Biller and Coder by taking a class on Medical Billing and Coding, and then received a certification (Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist - CMRS) right after. So now I want to be a remote medical biller and coder.

When I started getting unhappy with my past jobs, I reused the resume I had and looked for opportunities. Only when I really got unhappy, I took the time to rewrite my resume (most of the time changing everything/rewriting it). I always thought, now it is perfect, because I not only saw the improvement, but also got new jobs in a decent amount of time. But the more I read about it, the more I think you are right, and it is useful to spend the time and maybe money to get a very good resume, which can be easily adjusted. Less hassle when I want to apply again, and the recruiter would also be happy to see a resume matching the role and not a standard resume which just kind of fits.
As always, thanks for the video and have a great weekend :-)

Thank you for your video. With major job search engines like LinkedIn and Indeed, where you're able to store a CV and they offer Quick Apply, do you still suggest to tailor a CV for every submission there as well, or is the tailoring most recommended for applying on a company's direct website? Cheers.

I've been a lurker for a long time and love your content. Question: Should you include a bullet that briefly describes your responsibilities/scope of work for each role? I've gotten advice that you should list accomplishments/outcomes only. And, well, here I am. 🤣

That is the issue with tayloring your resume everything time: You start adding to the resume and bending the truth in regards to that particular role you're applying to! It's all good and everything is fine and great in doin this!

Thank you Amy. I've been paying $49 a month for Resume Worded to check % of me matching the job description. I would have scored very low if I only tailored Summary section. I would spend 4 hours average on each job.... My mind is cleared now...

Hi Amy- thanks for this video!
Only halfway through, buuutttt... I've considered changing titles to match JDs too... until I remember how suspicious it might look if my LinkedIn doesn't match. And with me being the example you gave (have past experience in this, looking to switch to that) it'd be too many changes (and hard to know when who's looking at your profile if you're aggressively sending out different resumes daily/weekly)... wonder how that works or what recruiters/hiring managers think about that

What is job titles aren’t the same but job responsibilities match. Can title be then adjusted to match?

As an H1B Visa holder, should we indicate the H1B status/ Work Authorization Status on our resume or LinkedIn? Most of the recruiters reach out to me with great interest and I'd say 70-80% of them unaware of my work authorization status schedule interviews and after they get to know my work authorization status, some of my interviews ended in middle :(

Amy, wouldn't it be prudent to tailor the resume to the needs of the employer?

Hi Amy,
Thank you so much for this advice.
What about the cases where one is trying to make a move from one industry to the other? For example I am trying to make a move from academics (university lecturer) to corporate(Talent Acquisition/Learning and development). I am having a tough time tailoring my resume to the requirements of corporate jobs although i have done quite a bit of same responsibilities but in a different context.

The first question I have been asked by a couple of recruiters I have interacted with is why do you interested in this job given your completely different background.. any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance..
