my thoughts on why the common rail engine fails

I've got an 04.5 manual. Never had an issue but I did have some rough running at one point . Some cetane boost/injector cleaning cleared it right up. Has 415, 000 km on it. Runs like a top. Running a smarty tuner change oil every 5000km never had a blow by issue. When the time comes I'll probably just rebuild because I know many people that sold their 5.9 common rails and bought new 6.7 cummins and almost immediately regret it.

You have to love the smokey air in the Central Valley during fire season. The only thing better is when the humidity rises! I, too, am in the Central Valley and it seems every year during summer the air gets thicker and thicker. This was a very insightful video. One thing I might add is the fact that a lot of people don't know how to diagnose and work on the diesels properly. They can pull things apart and put it back together, but they don't understand how the engine truly works and how to properly diagnose issues with the engine.I had an issue with the dealer here in the valley that I took my truck to. They couldn't figure out the issue with the truck. Their response was "it had a tuner on had a tuner, but rather they were incompetent. I'm trying to expand my knowledge of the 5.9 and learn how to work on them properly. Thank you for the them coming....

That was a great video, you do a wonderful job, i have a 2007 5.9 Cummins I love it I have 615, 000 km on it, it still works amazing,

Great video. You brought up alot of good points. I've only ever had 1 diesel truck. Was a 1986 GMC. With a nat aspirated 6.2. loved it, incredible fuel economy, completely gutless and very hard to start in the winter. Wish I still had it

I have a 2004.5 Dodge Ram 2500 with a automatic and 8 foot bed. Truck was bought 4 years ago with 125K and is totally unmolested no tuner totally stock. I went through the truck and the first thing I did is replace every filter and fluid I knew about that included the front and rear diff, trans, air, fuel and the of course the engine oil. Just ordered a Cummins CCV filter and will be checking closely the hoses and tubing for it.

The key reason I bought the truck was it was not tuned and very low mileage. I am retired mechanic as such yes my truck does tow but not heavy and I do make it work but with it have 65% no towing and short trips I always have changed the oil every 3, 000 miles because of my driving style. I am now due for another round of fluid replacement as I got 154K on the truck and I will be doing it soon. The only repairs I done is a complete front end, the water pump and tensioner with fresh antifreeze. I also do the fuel filter every 2nd oil change as I found that to be easy to do and protects the injectors. I do not use any additives except if I expect to be going to cold areas from my relatively warm area and I add some diesel 911 to the tank before filling up before the trip to try to mitigate fuel gelling.

Maintenance is always been a big thing to me and I do over maintain my vehicles but that simply means I can jump in any of the vehicles I own and drive cross country at a moments notice and know I will arrive safely and efficiently.

The only modifications I done is replace the front bumper with a winch bumper that I did a trade for my factory bumper.

I lost injector in my 06 at 110 thousand. I use additive now. Runs great with tow tune since new. Good video 👍👍

Also, highly recommend getting a laser thermometer when test driving. Easy way to check if all cylinders are firing. Quick measurement on the exhaust manifold will tell ya if a cylinder is dead

I have a 2006 with 456K the only thing I have done to the engine is the injectors. No blow-by and plenty of power.

11:03. The reason why #5 injector fails is because where the turbo is mounted on the exhaust manifold. More resistance for the exhaust gasses to exit.

Good point on the injectors but to be more specific the injectors fail from lack of good filtration. The common rail system requires a much lower micron rated fuel filter compared to the older trucks, it's really sensitive to dirty fuel. That's part of maintenance but most people that are used to having a gas truck don't change fuel filters at all or at least as often as it's required on a diesel.

I've found that the 03-early 04 had less injector problems, possibly due to 1 fewer injection event per cycle. Still depends on maintenance primarily.

I’m looking at getting an 06 w/ 6sp manual. 335k on the odometer. Kinda excited to get it!!

Usually the case with the 6.0 powerstroke. They were either ignoring small issues and they overheat and lift the heads or they didn’t do maintenance and the HUI systems plugged and injected failed.

Oil analysis can tell you alot about the condition of the engine. Especially If there is fuel in the oil. Mine has always been clean

I f up and put an edge programmer on my 05 and the bullydog wasn't completely back to stock when it said it was . So it ended up with 2 programs stacked and blew two injectors almost immediately when I hit that slim peddle on the floor ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is great info I'm looking at my first diesel early 04 ram 3500 5.9 with the NV5600 transmission with 122, 000 miles. Any thing I should look for?

I believe in Amsoil additives for fuel works very good and there’s other areas out there that are good also are all gone I can’t remember the name something clean I just can’t remember it it’s very good stuff and people like standdown they make a good quality additive it cleans and lubricates off that’s what you got to have a good lubrication and the cleaning keeps injectors where are you keep a nice fine mist your spray anyway are this is six in a row jim From Kennerdell Pennsylvania

Would you change injectors after a certain amount of time regardless of mileage?
