Technically it's not the first.. the X-15 back in 1958 was.. yes the US has had hypersonic missiles and aircraft long before it was cool.

The first hypersonic missile was a modified V2 rocket.. yes those V2 rockets. The US had ground launched interceptors back in the 70s that could go hypersonic (unclassified Mach 10) and that could maneuver mid flight. The Sprint Missle. And the US has been shooting down hypersonic missiles since the late 80s.

Fun fact anything over Mach 5 is hypersonic.
