Ukraine war: Zelenskyy tells soldiers ‘we are moving forward, we are ready for peace’

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited the newly retaken city of Kherson, thanking troops and residents for their courage, and singing the Ukrainian anthem as his country's flag was raised.

"We are ready for peace, for the whole country" he said - warning there was still a long and difficult path ahead.

Kherson was captured in March just weeks after Russia's full scale invasion, the only regional capital which Moscow managed to occupy. But with their supply lines increasingly cut off, Russian forces were forced to abandon the city - fleeing to the other side of the Dnipro river.

Having survived WWII in the care of my teenage aunts I so moved and saddened to see the beautiful finger nails of the Kherson ladies. Manicures are what we gave each other underground in bombshelters. It’s an act of defiance - no what the enemy delivers we’ll be pretty women. The sight has moved me to tears I never shed.

Thanks for this analyse. That`s all so true. The whole idea of Russia is sick. Isolation and force are the medicines. Thanks Great Britain for your courage in materiel support and moral support. We really respect your support to Ukraine. We in Finland should have nukes to have a big enough threat to discourage for russians not to mess with us. NATO suits well in this purpose. Hopefully the 2 last strong democraties (Hungary and Turkey) will make their acceptance of our membership
