*And don't forget, if you decide to give her a special defining characteristic, make sure it is exaggerated to the point it almost nauseates the reader. She has a special skill? She is the best person on the PLANET at it. All the adults must be amazed. Even with her complete lack of life experience, they will all think she's leadership material.* Just found your page and have been enjoying your content. I look forward to seeing more. Fair warning: I saw the Shatter Me series is on your to-read list. I would never discourage anyone from reading a book, but I will say- this video really hit the nail on the head when it comes to that particular series.

Also your collection of hardbacks in the back is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever see

There always, of course, should be that one incredibly hot side character girl. The main character MUST express an obvious distaste and sour envy towards them.

Another thing you should do is put them through 200 pages of magical school, only to make her the most powerful character at the end because of one old woman.

YES. YES. YES
'Oh it's about a corrupt magical world, and there's only one girl who can save it. She doesn't really want to initially, but she rallies her armies and hones her skills and saves the world. And she falls in love in the process'
This cookie-cutter formula is why I've pretty much given up on YA High Fantasy. They're all exactly the same: Hero's Journey but not interesting. I have to see something VERY different from the summary before I'll pick up a fantasy book now. Six of Crows is awesome, but Shadow and Bone felt like a book I'd read before. Many times.

This is great advice!! But I will be breaking a few of these rules for certain themes in my book, especially since my book is gonna have spice-free romance and themes about family rejection and overcoming them. However, you must learn the rules to break them, so this was super helpful!

Don't forget that they also will be constantly too nervous/sad/angry/constipated to eat her food. And then when she feels better will be too busy to eat. Whatever the case it's most important that you say how much she enjoys eating, without ever actually showing it.

Wow! Thank you so much for this video. Now I am ready to hit my hit YA book, with my ugly/skinny/clumsy/pretty female protagonist who btw has a weird name, or a real-world name but spelled differently. Smart, right? Also, I have a question; am I aloud to make both my love interests buffy and tanned or it won't be original? OMG i have so much inspiration thanks to you, going to start!

I'm three movies in to the Hunger Games movies, and I came across this vid in my reading of the reviews for the first book on Goodreads. Good stuff.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have started to brainstorm in coming up with ideas for my very first YA novel book and your advice came in at a good moment, I was youtube surfing for info about writing and your video just popped up in my list out of nowhere! I am still debating between a female character or a boy character though, thank you for such good info, by the way, I just subscribed to your channel.
