External GPU sometimes can be beneficial especially for task that really require power of GPU, maybe like converting in Handbrake even on Video Editor

Sometimes, External GPU can be not practical especially for Laptop that doesn't have Thunderbolt connector

Makes sense if you have more than one laptop, or mini pc. Leave the gpu connected to a gaming monitor or TV if you're into that. Hook it to a thunderbolt docking station with type c pd and a mouse and keyboard or preferred editing or gaming accessories attached to the dock. when you want a desktop experience pop the laptop up onto the desk and with one type c plug using thunderbolt or USB 4 you have added the desktop experience to the laptop. Maybe it's not always as fast as a 16x pcie slot but it does allow different upgrade cycles between devices, gaming or workstation capability without the heft of a gaming or workstation laptop and ability to switch between cpu or laptop units without the costs of having big gpus in all of them.
