That's introducing too many characters and subplots. If Yoshi is a companion, then you should give them a scene or two together to flesh out their dynamic. But they're treated as a race here, and I like that. It's subtle, but familiar

It would have been cool if they used them to travel through the mushroom kingdom

Its because as the player is playing the game they tend to eat to many mushrooms so they get fat and squish the Yoshi which make them endangered animals so therefore no one ride them anymore
