At the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the largest ever exhibition of Johannes Vermeer (1632-75) is taking place - in fact, it is already sold out. Out of Vermeer’s 37 known paintings, 28 are on display in this show. This is still a very small number of paintings for a large gallery space, but the curators’ faith in a ‘less is more’ approach has been worthwhile; the exhibition has been heralded in reviews as a triumph. Here we have put together all of the exhibition paintings (all images taken from Wikipedia).

If you haven’t heard of Johannes Vermeer before, he was a Dutch painter working in 17th-century Delft (a city in the Netherlands). Although he was only moderately successful during his lifetime, he went on to be recognised as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. His paintings generally focus on detailed interior scenes of middle-class life, with an extraordinary use of light and shadow.
