Johannes Vermeer: A collection of 41 paintings (HD)

Description: "Johannes was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings.
Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, and frequently used very expensive pigments. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.
Vermeer painted mostly domestic interior scenes. "Almost all his paintings are apparently set in two smallish rooms in his house in Delft; they show the same furniture and decorations in various arrangements and they often portray the same people, mostly women."
He was recognized during his lifetime in Delft and The Hague, but his modest celebrity gave way to obscurity after his death. He was barely mentioned in Arnold Houbraken's major source book on 17th-century Dutch painting (Grand Theatre of Dutch Painters and Women Artists), and was thus omitted from subsequent surveys of Dutch art for nearly two centuries. In the 19th century, Vermeer was rediscovered by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger, who published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him, although only 34 paintings are universally attributed to him today. Since that time, Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age."

It's crazy that we can see within 3:37 minutes paintings it took that man about 23 years to paint altogether. This is real privilege - most of us, 60 years back, would not have been able to see all the originals somewhere and not all of us would have bought or borrowed an art book containing prints of the paintings!

Istenem a rég múltból is milyen maradandó emlékek maradtak ránk. Nagyon szépek a festmények. Jó hogy erre is figyelmeztetnek benünket.

It's always nice to find a few previously unknown paintings of a great master, right? So I got really excited to see this promising title of 41 Vermeers. But here's the problem... The first one and the last 3 paintings are by Han van Meegeren. Saint Praxedis is of disputed attribution for the last 8-10 years, and Girl with a Flute is on the same list for the last 3-4 years. But even counting those two canvases Vermeer's entire known oeuvre consists of 36 paintings. So even with the 4 by van Meegeren it comes to 40. Great job.

Nice presentation, but am wondering how you arrived at 41 Vermeer paintings. It is my understanding there are only 36 Vermeer paintings out there in the World.

Im glad he used this mirror technique to paint (even if it diminishes his artist cred) because its like having film footage of the distant past...so immediate and sharp .like we are right there

"A prophet is without honor in his hometown" (Mark. ch. 6). This is very true for such masters as Vermeer and van Gogh. Poor Vermeer was never recognized during his life, neither van Gogh. False artdealers even changed his signatures to Rembrandt so that they would sell!! As for van Gogh, we all know his tragic story... This shows that a true artist paints because he HAS TO, an urge from within himself, not because of vain glory, vanity or deceit.

Could you please list the musical artists accompanying the slideshows? Thanks!

Any ideas on why so many of his paintings are set in a room with the subject looking out a window ?

I know we can easily look it up, but isnt it somewhat of an obvious omission not to give the dates of when he was born and died and the general decades he produced his masterpieces. Sorry to gripe. Perhaps it's petty of me to do so considering all the hours of pleasure this wonderful channel has brought me.
