Hi guys! My name is Veronika, but all my friends and family back in Germany call me Vroni :)
I was born and raised in the probably most well known part of Germany - in beautiful Bavaria 💙 home of the best beer and pretzels 🥨
Back in fall of 2015 I met my husband, who was stationed in my home town at this time. In spring 2019 it was time for him to PCS back to the U.S.
While I´ve moved several times in my life before, it was never further than 10 miles.
Well now, almost 5,000 miles away, we found our new home in Georgia for the next few years.

In my videos I want to share what it's like to live in the United States as a foreigner as well as cultural differences between the two countries.

Come say HALLO on my other social medias!

Wow, the accent is half German and half southern. That's a first for me.

I don’t like the gaps in the bathroom either.

The gap in the stall was designed for easier cleaning and to deter people from doing things they shouldn’t do inside the stalls like drugs or sex. It keeps people moving too, if you’re mildly uncomfortable in the stall then it’s achieving it’s purpose

college tuition has increased more than massively since I went to university in the 90s.

My culture shock was to find out how scared Armicans are on a day to day basis. Like they never feel safe.

I never think about the "gap". It has just always been there.
Another great video! 👏

Hey guys ☺ at one point in my video I’m referring to “the North” and “the South” of the United States. What I meant was the South and the rest of the US. In my head I was just picturing the map being divided in the middle.
OF COURSE I also meant to refer to the Midwest as well as the Far West ☺

The price of college education has SKYROCKETED in the US. It has increased far faster than almost any other expense. People talk a lot about student loan forgiveness, but nobody ever holds the universities' feet to the fire over the INSANE cost increases! Why should a student NEED a $200, 000 loan to get a degree? It's brutal, especially for lower-income students.

College used to be way more affordable in the United States. My parents both attended the University of Wisconsin in the 70s and their tuition was basically 10% of what I'm paying right now. Up to that point, colleges received a lot of federal funding for maintaining campuses and paying employees and teachers, but in the 80s that started to change when the government started cutting funding, causing schools to increase tuition costs to cover the shortfall. On top of that, demand for higher education and the expansion of administrative systems in state schools further drove up tuition

The gap has always been that way here. But in all the years I've used them no one has ever peeked in at me. If the vast majority of people see two feet under the door they move on or wait by the sink.

In a rural county region in the USA (generally in the American south), the mailboxes may be located closer to the road, which makes it a lot easier for the Postman to deliver especially, with some houses being as far away as a mile down the driveway. Most mailboxes in the USA, are indeed attached to the front door of the houses, with most mail slots being built into the front doors.

Culture shock for me was pay public restrooms. I get it, but ... was very shocking to me.
Second thing that was shocking to me when I was in Germany was dogs were in restaurants. I’m fine with it I just wasn’t used to it. Although now the US is becoming much more dog friendly in public spaces.

Something I find kind of funny about the students loan debt crisis is there are solutions to better managing debt burdens. Lenders who work with Financial Aid usually offer repayment plans based on income, while private lenders offer solutions like refinancing, referrals to credit repair services and other things. Right now I'm sitting on $60k in student loans ($45K through Financial Aid, $15K from a private lender). My Financial Aid lender offered me a repayment plan based on my income, which is $100 per month. The private lender I'm working with I have 5 separate loans with, and they allow me to pay each one separately (3 are $50 per month, one is $75 and one is $120) and evenly distribute them throughout the month in a way which allows me to keep my obligations to the loans without landing me in the poorhouse

The bathroom thing is something I’ve never thought about since it’s how all public bathrooms are including school so growing up really we used that style more than home, so private bathrooms are just a luxury

Thank you for saying "college" and not "university"...because not all colleges are university level. Mail delivery depends on how the city/town/village was planned. Rural areas and newer suburban areas usually have the mailboxes roadside so the mailcarrier can drive by and reach out the window. Larger/older cities are normally set up to deliver right to the house.

Our mailboxes are by the road because in rural areas they have to cover a lot of ground by delivering mail by car.
As far as the bathroom stalls go, I have also heard that the large gap below the door is in case someone passes out in there they can be rescued.
