Assuming it isn't just fake. What if the un-named company wanted to see how quickly these codes would be cracked and wanted to keep it discrete? Maybe they were trying to test the code cracking/ARG community without letting it get to much exposure.

It would explain why there was no apparent meaning, because it wasn't about the solution but finding the solution.

For keeping it hidden I'm not sure. Maybe they wanted to keep the group at a certain size? Maybe they thought the more people were trying to crack it their true intentions would be discovered?

Maybe its marketing for an illegal service, trying some of the "gibberish" on TOR may garner some results. This would explain why they kept going private.
