I love how even when you held her thumb away from her mouth so she could speak, you didn't restrict her hand so she could still stim using the toothbrush bristles. All the time I see autistic kids in 'therapy' having their hands held down so they can't stim to calm themselves and it makes me want to cry, thank you for being so accommodating of your daughter's needs. I wish we could all have parents like you.

I am verbal, but I have a friend who is non-verbal. The hardest thing, but also the best is when she says new words. I try not to make her feel pressured to say words again, but the first time I heard "Nooo-AH" (my name is Nora) I was close to tears.

This is so cute. My nephew is autistic, and was non-verbal for his first 2 years until I moved in with my sister with my 2 children during my husband's 1st deployment in 2007. My daughter is 9 months older than him, and they were best friends from the beginning. My daughter was talking early, but only a few words at a time until she was 2, after which she would talk nonstop. When we moved in, they were always together, and he began to repeat words while she was speaking. Soon, he was repeating words he heard the rest of us saying. One time, my sister, her husband, my parents and I were at the table playing board games, when we heard Hayden yelling, "No No, Fannah!!" (My daughter's name is Savannah, but her big brother called her "Fannah") We all started laughing hysterically, because not only had he picked that up from my son when he'd yell at his little sister, but we also saw that she wasn't even downstairs with him! She was sitting upstairs on the couch, watching a movie. We listened, and he just kept saying it, over and over again. It was so cute.
Another funny instance was only a few months later. Hayden must have been about 4 by this time. He wouldn't call my sister and my brother in law "Mom and Dad, " but instead called them by their first names, Becca and Anders. Anders was leaning back against the kitchen counter while chatting with the rest of us in the living room. Hayden came upstairs to the kitchen, and had been barely able to peek over the edge of the counter to see some chocolate candy on it. He began to try to climb up to get it when my brother in law saw him and said, "No No, that's not for Hayden." Hayden became incensed, stomped his foot, and yelled loudly, "That's not for Anders!!!" We all couldn't stop laughing, and to this day, we still tell those 2 stories when we all get together.
Here's something encouraging: when Hayden was your daughter's age, my little sister feared he would never speak normally, would never be on par with others his age in school, would never socialize, and all the other fears that all parents with autistic children feel. But today, Hayden is a senior in high school, which is on-level with his peers, he has plenty of friends (many of which are online, but he has a handful of real life friends, also), he is graduating this spring, he went to homecoming, and has been accepted by the Colorado School of Mines (which is where his parents met, fell in love, and had their wedding) and will be starting there in the fall.
You're doing a great job, Mama!! There were days that my sister would cry and feel so defeated, but she pushed through and loved that boy so much! Keep doing what you're doing, lean on your loved ones for support, and don't forget to make time for just you and your hubby to reconnect and nurture your relationship. Your marriage is important! Love each other, forgive quickly, listen to each other, and try to attend to each others needs as well as your own. You've got this, and so does your daughter!

My daughter was nonverbal until she was almost 3. With Speech Therapy and her hard work, she is a Chatty Cathy now. I remember really hearing her voice for the first time and getting so emotional. She has such a sweet voice. 🥹❤
