Chauvet Cave contains the earliest-known and best-preserved figurative drawings in the world,
These date back to 30,000–32,000 years old, making it an exceptional testimony of prehistoric art.
The cave was closed off by a rock fall approximately 20,000 years ago and remained sealed until its discovery in 1994, which helped to keep it in pristine condition.

Hundreds of animal paintings depicting at least 13 different species, including some rarely or never found in other ice age paintings.
The walls of the Chauvet Cave feature many predatory animals like cave lions, leopards, bears, and cave hyenas. There are also paintings of rhinoceroses!
In addition to the paintings, they also discovered fossilized remains of animals, some of which are now extinct.
