I am a very causal basketball fan and this was super clear and helpful.

I don't get it I know they remove hand checking to make offensive player more versatile and score more. But how come offensive player can swipe a defenders arm, push away after a crossover with their hands or elbow. like that just so unfair.

Make hand checking legal again in the NBA

That is why point guards in 90s were tough and they are mostly played post up dribbling because of that kind of defensive pressure. Looks unimpressive because they had limited moves.

Worst rule change in basketball. Basically gives the offense a 1 - 2 step head start. Now add in the ticky tack application of foul calls by the ref, and it's just a dunk contest with a few passes and whistles blown. The hand check rule went way too far. It would be like, in the era of everyone hitting so many 3 pointers, they allowed goaltending again.

The rule IS NOT enforced Enough .when defensive players go for the ball in most instances they put a hand or hands on the offensive player defense used to be taught to play with your feet (positioning) not your hands. Allowing hand checking leads to more aggressive actions by players which I'm noticing as a referee today's players can't handle without getting into altercations! Call it early lends itself to a smoother game physically

If you play 1 on 1 a lot you know how hard it is to play against hand checking player who stop your driving single handedly. You end up shooting jumper and it's easier to get blocked. It's just so fucking frustrating defensive player stay in from of you just because they can use their hand to stay in position.

It's a pathetic rule. They just want easy offence. They want more flashy plays. More high scoring. All while killing the game.

That was smart basketball by the Georgia player

So this basically holds the same significance as targetting nowadays. Yeah, softer era indeed...

Now we have offensive players deliberately running into players and hooking their arms and somehow that’s a foul on the defensive player smh

Without hand checking it has allowed offensive players who already have an advantage to have even more of an advantage and basically make it impossible to stay in front of them. Thats why the nba has gotten boring because alongiside weak foul calls and no hand checking no defense can actually be played

This is what the game was in the GOATs era..Hand checking makes it easy to stay in front of the player..NOW u have to slide them lazy ass feet and play some real defense.. Flopping is also on the rise because defenders are trying to get turnovers the best way they can...

Thats also whats happening in todays nba. Nba open up the lane for players. Easy three, easy lay ups and dunks.

Yeah please tell me again how the 80s and 90s were much easier than today? Imagine a guy like Gary Payton, Jordan, Drexler, Pippen putting his hand on you and keeping it there as you try make your way out of it. Where are you gonna go? Nowhere.

I’m all for hand-checks on defense. That being said, defenders shouldn’t complain about offensive players using their off-arm to swipe away hand-checks.

That's not a foul. Let me clarify, it wasn't a foul for the longest time and then David Stern and Adam Silver destroyed basketball creating the flopping clown show / defensive straightjacket sports league in the world. Basketball allows for contact so long as the contact does not forcibly move a player off their established position or path. Literally all fouls come back to this concept with the exception of a Technical. Keeping this in mind, if an offensive player, dribbling, bends the off arm at 90 to shield the ball from the defender he is within his right to do so. He is also allowed to maintain consistent contact with his defender, however if the bent arm is used in a way that changes the defenders established position (where he is standing) on the court by raising from the shoulder or straightening of the arm it's an offensive foul. Hand checking is the defensive equivalent, if the defensive player moves the offensive player (foul: PUSH) or restricts his movement (foul: BLOCK or REACH). Those fouls were called consistently but just like MLB chasing more homeruns for more fans, NBA is chasing higher scoring games like the Harlem Globe Trotters doesn't exist.
