California made history on Monday by becoming the first state in the country to allow college athletes to get paid for their name and image, while still attending school. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law, allowing student athletes to hire agents and sign endorsement deals. CBS Sports Senior Writer, Matt Norlander has more on what this means for the future of college sports.

NCAA worried about their pockets not the student-athletes.

Call me crazy but I thought getting paid to play was the difference between an amateur and a professional athlete.

I'm glad California has all their major problems solved so the state legislature has time to focus on this issue.

If California is the only state, college sports is done. All top recruits will go staight there. This, like other decisions there, is just terrible and will ruin college sports.

Then they don't need scholarships...

Lmfao. Most of the athletes can barely pass a basic math class.

Great now they can pay their taxes and tuition like the rest of us.

Everyone else is making a ton of money off of NCAA sports except those actually doing the work so why not.

So the students are gonna be footing the bill for the uneducated athletes that already receive booster money

Also gets rid of the fun factor of making money as a true NBA professional. Now you get paid in college so who cares.

So now I guess The Vols will have to buy some good players. If this is the case then they should have to pay for College. No more free scholarships. No more tradition. Now players wont be playing for their team. They will be playing for the name on the back of their jerseys.

What are they doing about the homeless problem they have?

Well then they better lose all other special privileges from colleges if they’re getting paid.

I thought free college was pay enough for college athletes.

Idiotic. They already get paid, it's called a scholarship. Not a single one of them are worth the value of the scholarship.

So free high dollar education wasn't enough huh? They know the risks when they take those scholarships!

This is going to get really expensive for the small schools. Now every man and women (who are already getting a free tuition for playing sports) is going to want to get paid as well....and college's already have a lot of sports programs from chess to football. This will raise tuition for those without sports
