One of the first steps when thinking about turning a van in to a camper is coming up with the layout. In fact, this step needs to be considered before even buying a van. So today we are going to run through how we design our van layouts, whilst designing the layout for this very van.

What about weight distribution across axles and payload ? What things weigh and where you put them affect braking steering, clutch burn out etc.

Nic 😂 There are some standardised symbols for things in your layout- get yourself an architect’s pocket guide or something girl! Will make your life easier and your drawings more readable. Solid start and concepts for designing your layout though X

have you ever thought about putting you plans out in a space out of the van and building a mock up out of cardboard boxes they do this when planning house extensions on tv programm i watch. would give you a picture of what your going to get and space.you could get dimetions of thing you would like to put in van build out box see out it looks plus it will save on money and mistakes dam i might build one

We're at this stage deciding a layout (although we'll need someone to build it for us).
I love the really practical and simple ways you've explained this. The squares make 100% sense simplistically, especially as I feared we'd need some special software to even start. You explained the additional space considerations really well too, like wheel arches. Nic, you sounds like such a pro at this. I remember seeing some of your early videos too and know you have loads of experience and confidence.

Also think, what you will use most during every day. If you only use a bed 8 hrs day then it could be a murphy unit and fold away. But if you use the bed 12+ hrs day, then it should be fixed. etc etc etc Plus, where is the entertainment area ? if needed ?

As your talking about the W/C, did the Murphy shower not work ?? As for the skylight, go a marine shop, you'll be able to get a large sky light.

Curious about your escape hatch assuming it's that rectangle in your other van. Have you tested escaping through it with people by age? I just know those who are not as agile if renting may have difficulty when climbing over a kitchen. This was fascinating to watch and informative.

How do you deal with condensation?
Also heating? Some vehicles I have seen have small burners and a chimney out through the roof.
