💡 Game Development programming roles explained part 3: Backend and Server programming.
"Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise."
- Michael Jordan
I found this a great quote linking to backend and server developers in games. Because both of these roles are the start and fundament of your game which of the rest gets connected to and implemented on.
🎮 Backend developer:
A backend developer develops everything in the client that's not visible to the user. These are often implementing services that run to make your game work. Think of log in systems, saving and loading, purchasing items and achievements. This makes a backend developer responsible for the foundation of your game which is not visible to the user, but very important.
🎮 Server developer:
A server developer is responsible for everything that has to do with multiplayer. It sends information about a multiplayer game to the client which then a game play programmer can visualize and a backend developer can apply to services.
---------
Thereby said a server developer is not always required. Most of the mobile games run on cloud based servers that are easy to use and often is a backend developers responsibility. So, nowadays server developers are often required for big sized projects with custom servers. Backend developers are always on high demand but in smaller scoped projects and companies a backend developer often also has gameplay responsibilities.
What do you think about backend and server programming? Is this something that interests you? Don't hesitate to do some further research and experiment with developing some things on your own. 🤩
