3 Utahns drown on canyoneering trip in California

I’ve been stuck in an undercurrent at the bottom of the waterfall in a raft. It’s a terrifying experience. I am so sorry to all of those affected. This is beyond tragic.

I just got back from fishing that whole area. I was there yesterday know wonder there was a heavy police and paramedic presence. Rip to the deceased. Plunge pools can be very dangerous.

RIP 3 Utahns. The last drop, nicknamed the toilet bowl, has a strong backflow requiring powerful swimming strokes to escape. Tragic loss of lives. People have descended the teacups and then swum/floated down to the bridge. Big mistake one time when a young canyoneer failed to exit before Carson falls. He drowned. Carson falls is Class V. Serious injuries have happened descending Peppermint creek just north of Dry Creek (7 Teacups). Condolences to the families.

Interesting the difference between white water rafting where you always scout the area and mentally determine your pathway before entering any water even with a raft and life vest. How can you know in canyoneering if any pool has no undercurrent? Sidewalls with no ledges? It all sounds so risky. Sorry for all the family of these wonderful and adventurous people.

Most people, especially out of towners, or state visitors in this case, don’t realize how dangerous kern river is. I can’t say I’ve been in that area where they died at but the section in kern canyon is dangerous and even has signs posted known deaths since 1960s. (Think it’s around or over 300 now)
