Why You Shouldn't Repair A Touch Screen With Just the Glass!

Here's a video on why you shouldn't bother trying to repair your broken touch screen device with just the glass. For this example I used a Moto G with a working LCD, but cracked glass. Enjoy.

It is ACTUALLY quite possible to replace just the glass! Most display assemblies are layered like this: back-light, liquid crystal display, digitizer, glass... It's key to separate just the glass from the rest of the display. If you separate any of the other layers you're done! Be prepared and patient, then use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat up the screen (keep the heat moving, if you focus on one spot for too long you'll burn the lcd). The heat will make the adhesive plyable so you can then use a thin pry tool or playing card etc to CAREFULLY get in between the the broken glass and lcd to CAREFULLY separate them. You will probably have to reheat the adhesive many times during the removal... As soon as you feel resistance, reheat! Once you're done removing the broken glass, CAREFULLY clean the lcd well (goo-gone, followed by alcohol, then a lcd cloth) be sure to remove smudges and fingerprints, then CAREFULLY adhere the new glass with LOCA (aka liquid optically clear adhesive), place in the sun to cure and you're all good! Keep in mind this IS DEFINITELY a riskier repair (as correctly stated in the video). The display is very fragile and one wrong move will render it useless and you'll have to do the assembly replacement anyway, but done CAREFULLY, it is possible. Look up glass replacement tutorials for your device model and watch how it's done! Happy repairing! 😊

As an amateur phone repair guy, I have to give this video a thumbs down, its discouraging ppl from doing something on the basis that this guy either did utter crap or tried to fix a screen that was already seriously damaged. 1. Inspect the screen for non glass related damage, ie see if cracks are only on the top layer of the screen or if they are seen on the lower layer (the digitizer) before heating the screen sufficiently and carefully removing only the top glass layer. I'm assuming the Moto G's screen even if functioning was utterly shattered and was only being held together by the glue used to attach the glass onto the digitizer. 2. At the 1:40 mark in the video was where you stop and test the screen as it seems all the glass has been removed. he on the other hand is still heating, cracking, damaging and further destroying the part of the display he is supposed to be salvaging. sadly ppl here thought it was doing the right thing.

It's really easy if you know what you're doing and use the proper tools. you need a hot plate to get it to the right temperature, by the time you've done a couple of phones the hot plate would've paid itself off

I tried replacing the glass only and have come to the same conclusion, it's close to undoable without special equipment (didn't even have a heat gun but used a hairdryer). Still, you shouldn't make assumptions on the cost of time for your viewers - 20pounds is actually some money people might try to save by investing a couple of hours.

Also, on some phones it's rather easy to remove the glass only, like the lg g3, as the glass (with touch) is one unit and the lcd/backlight another. The thing with lg g2/3 is that often the glass stays intakt and the lcd breaks…

If glass is cracked it's doable. With a HEAT GUN. A hair dryer your just wasting time. If glass is shattered though then don't even bother. Picking out every speck off the LCD will be a nightmare.
