Imagine being me and having started AOE2 at the age of 7, at 1999. I was an absolut noob. I still am! LOL

I'm a 1650 ELO at 35 years old. Knowing there are 3 year olds with that elo makes me feel awesome lol

For anyone interested, that 3 y/o is Anish Sarkar and the youngest grandmaster ever is Abhimanyu Mishra

Counterpoint to this is that's way low elo ranked AoE2 is brutal these days. You just start your first ranked multiplayer match and get 10 guys in a row that actually know what they are doing and destroy you. I finally started loosing enough to start winning again. It's a really hard downward grind at the begining.

I've been literally watching your all videos for the last months. I've learnt a lot about your vill distrubitions, vill count via timer, 2nd and 3rd TC placements, in game desicions etc. and I even took your "stick with 1-2 civs at first" advice. I was 1100 before now I'm 1415. I had 13W 2L in my last 15 games. Thank you so much <3

I played since 2001, when I was 14. For like 5 years, I had no idea gathering rates for food sources were different. Berries FTW!
I also didn't patrol my armies but just right-clicked all the time for years.
But I was still one of the top 10% players who played online, on the Zone.

I think my level of play back then was barely enough to be 1.2k nowadays. Then again, we now have so many 'quality of life' features and, like Hera said this video, so many examples of pros we can watch and information we can access to know what's smart and how the game should be played to increase your odds.

The reason you can't break 1800 is because you focus so much on AoE. Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to criticise you, on the contrary, I'm trying to stop these negative believes you might have about your IQ and whatnot. If you put as much time into improving at chess as you do with AoE you'd easily reach 1800 and with your growth mentality 2000 would not be unrealistic either imo. If you are 1700-1800 that means you have a good basic understanding of the game. What you need is polishing up your openings so you don't get into bad positions, train tactics like a madman to improve your tactical awareness, and spend a lot of time analyzing your games to understand when and why things may go wrong to shore up any major weaknesses that are holding you back.

The crossover we needed! Chess is one of my games, I've won multiple state championships as a school chess coach. I see your point about the age starting younger, kids these days are more tech savvy and digital games are on the up and up. When I played AoE in college 20+ years ago, there were no tutorials! So some perspective there.

It's funny, I got solid 1800-1900 a couple times. Whenever I peaked was when I enjoyed the game the least but felt the most satisfaction from wins. After this I'd periodically join random lobbies - FN, 10x shared, 256x, ffa, cba and just goof around for a couple weeks. Then I'd come back to the ladder and enjoy the (1v1) game again for a couple months. I enjoy enjoying the game more than being good. Thanks for the guidance, it's been a journey!

With information easily available, people can pick up the game faster, but i feel people are less likely to develop personal styles that are distinct from the meta, and less likely to understand the nuances of why things are done in a specific way/order as they don't need to think through it independently

Hera, i only started playing AoE one year ago with pressure from some veteran friends. Ten years of Dota 2 before this.

Found your channel early on, as I knew how to improve from my time with Dota with internet content. Skyrocketed my skill in AoE. I regularly beat players with THOUSANDS of ranked games while i have.... 350!

Love your channel and effort and attitude bro. I need to sub your Patreon.

I'd say that nowadays it's much more about being mechanically precise and disciplined and much less about actual thinking, just like any professional sports-just do what coaches says and follow it; maybe something like studying literature at good university versus being a writer.

Love the video, Hera! A small thing that bothered me was that you used gameplay clips where you're talking, and multiple times throughout the video, I tried to match the audio with the talking, which was a bit distracting. Maybe in the future, you could instead place something over the face - like the actual new recording of the audio clip or even whatever other still image ❤

Dude, this video nails the nail on the head in so many ways.

It applies to many fields. I am 32 and have been told by over 50 people to become a psychologist. All from who wemt to professionals and then after a 10th of the time hanging out talking with me said they were way better off. Then some who went to professionals after and said my help made them feel going was a waste of time.

I grew up doing tons of research into it and how to be a strong moral impact on others. (The bible and my faith in Christ has has helped that tons too).

The younger generations are able to soak up and challange things they have learned to grow so fast and be so much greater than generations before.

From a standpoint of societies, it is an awesome thing.

From your AOE2 scene to chess, sports and acedemincs. The youth are showing incredible potential. So cool.

Great perspective man, hope you are having a good day.
