The Tune that Helped Redefine the Sound of Modern Doom Music (Within the MIDI - Ep. 4)

Another episode Within the MIDI is here! This series is where we analyze the inner workings (music theory, composing techniques, etc.) of Doom WAD MIDIs and see what makes them sound great in the process.

For our fourth episode, we'll be heading down a slightly different path with “Fireblu Baptism” by MegaSphere from 2022's Not Even Remotely Fair. While not the first to do so, this piece (as with the entire NERF soundtrack) helped popularize the sounds of genres like hip-hop, R&B, and dance, which, historically, have been less commonly heard in Doom WAD MIDI music.

♫ Thank you for watching! ♫

The positive reception I received on the hiphop influenced tracks from the Master Levels MIDI Pack is what got me to double down on that sound for NERF.

I choose music you could vibe to as heavy music would get grating fast on how often you'll be dying and repeating parts of the level.

And to keep the song from becoming stale, even after it has looped a bunch of times, I make sure to include plenty of variation between sections.

(Oh and the cuica, my beloved, is supposed to represent that offbeat chant sound that's very popular in hiphop).

Thanks for the track analysis! And thanks for recommending NERF!

Hell yeah I ran this on Audiosurf and it was incredibly fun. Insanely awesome music and love that Peter is pushing synth and hiphop tracks

Great vid, I enjoyed the taste of the creative process where you tinkered with the notes and it didn't work. Shows how much effort and trial and error goes into great compositions.

Ooooh! This was a surprise! I have heard of NERF, but I never really was into the OST, until this episode of Within the MIDI!

I might buy the OST if I hear any more bangers within!

I bought NERF's OST after listening to it just once. It is one of the pillars of DOOM Midi's best year yet, without a doubt.
