“Studies indicate that we can fill up to 80% of the user’s visual field with ads without inducing seizures”

I bought my TV to be a TV. Not an ad platform. I would run screaming from Roku for this one.

Dark patterns are a subversion of the expected interaction
inverted wording etc, those fainter little check boxes in places you expect only fine print, etc
Making it harder to unsubscribe than sign up, Unreasonable Exit fees,
The goal is to trick you into something, and make it much harder to escape from it if your not paying attention.

Sometimes YouTube likes to play 2 unskippable ads right before I pause a video and I’m like “ok sure whatever.” And then when I unpause literally seconds later it plays another 2 unskippable ads. One of the most annoying moments I experience on this platform

2:49 the comment about the Black Friday prices is both true and false. Those items were made to be sold at a discount for Black Friday. The manufacturer establishes a high MSRP but instructs the stores to sell the product at a much lower cost. The store can advertise a discount because technically, it is discounted, and the store still makes money because "discount" price is still higher than the cost of the product.

That Costco Auto Renew Card is a Dark Pattern. Also it's weird that he isn't so jaded to recognize how bad dark patterns can be.

The dating apps one is so real. They realized that they only win if their customers stay in the dating phase forever.

i paid for one of those custom ringtones. not only did it charge me more than once, it also didn't give me the ringtone because "my phone wasn't compatible". how tf was i supposed to know phone compatibilities from tiny print on a crt tv

I am old enough to remember those commercials. I did one that was for jokes, not knowing youd get charged. Imagine my shock when my parents got mad at 12 year old me

Youtube fills empty ad space with their own ads (for premium) on empty ad space. I've seen it

Still as good now as it was back then, worth every penny of £20 a month forever.

It does say "iced sugar cookie" not "sprinkled iced sugar cookie."
It is annoying, but I'd rather not have the sprinkles to begin with.

The not enough ads to fill the space is already a problem.
If you watch TV there is usually the same ad played 4 or 5 times in a single ad break.
Same online, you will see the same ad played multiple times which is pointless both for the consumer (we waste time and don't learn about any new products) and for the advertiser (they pay multiple times to serve its ad to the same person).

YouTube has started playing an ad the moment I press Pause on a video. The trouble is, I've pressed pause because I need to take a phone call, or speak to a person in the room, or use the audio space around me, and I need the sound/noise to stop _NOW_, so I press pause, and then YouTube plays ads and then _resumes the video_! Very Very annoying new feature.

I always just think of the half-full deodorant thing as "you're paying for x ounces of deodorant, and they need to make the container it's in big enough to easily hold in your hand and use." and then don't care that the container is only half full.

yes, that is the precise definition of a Dark Pattern. UX designed to drive users into performing actions they would otherwise refuse consciously. it usually takes advantage of muscle memory or psychology tricks to promote an action over the other, but not as blatant as an ad which you can tell every time that something is intentional.

I have gotten that one too, spam invoice for software. They told me I owned $300 for MS Office, etc and I laughed at the e-mail since I run Linux and do not use MS Office and it doesnt even work on any PC in the house.
