Autistic TV - TV shows with an autistic edge

You don't have to make a story about an autistic character to make it very relevant to autistic viewers. Here I talk about 3 different TV shows, all either ongoing or still available on streaming platforms, that speak to me personally as an autist.

Parks & Recreation is a favorite for sure
Edit: Severance looks fantastic. I don't currently have Apple TV, but I might need to remedy that. Thank you for the recommendation.

I've been asked a few times where these shows can currently be found to watch, so I'll do my best (for UK viewers at least). If anyone else has more up-to-date info to share or wants to add details for other locales, then please reply to this comment. So in the order of the video above...

"Bron/Broen/The Bridge" was, until recently, available in full on the BBC iPlayer (free to UK TV License holders) but sadly not any more. It's come & gone a couple of times though, so keep an eye out. I'll update this comment if I see it return. The full 4 series are available on blu-ray for around £30 and individual episodes can be streamed (for a fee) from a number of providers including Amazon Prime and right here on YouTube.

"Parks & Recreation" can be streamed for free in the UK on Amazon's ad supported "Freevee" service. It's also available on NBC's "Peacock" subscription service internationally, which UK viewers can also access via "Now TV". Physical box-sets of all 7 seasons run at £55-65 brand new.

"Severance" is currently exclusive to Apple TV. Apple TV offers a 7 day free trial which is enough for many viewers to watch all 9 episodes (so far). The remaining 10 episodes are in production but there's no release date at the time of writing.

If, like me, you don't mind buying used/2nd hand then it's worth checking ebay and/or local media resellers for better prices.

I know there are other methods of finding & watching shows that cost less/nothing but please don't discuss them in these comments 😉

As an Autistic child of the 90s and early 2000s myself who lives in the US, I find it very difficult to find ANY TV shows that portray the Autism community in a positive light without turning them into some kind of inspiring character ("The Good Doctor") or a one note trope (Sheldon Cooper of "The Big Bang Theory" and "Young Sheldon")

I recommend, out of all things, WWE for a great autistic coded character named Sami Zayn since he’s not a stereotype, he’s hyperlexic, empathetic, extremely social, he has a wife and son, etc. Over the past year and a half he’s starred in a storyline where he was abused by a NPD person and it was frighteningly accurate to an experience I had where a NPD abuser hurt me. It’s weird but Sami has made me realize that it’s ok that I stand up for myself and not tolerate abuse, even if I just say ‘no’ instead of hitting my abuser with a folding chair.

"Astrid" (Amazon Prime w/PBS Masterpiece subscription) is a French series in which the protagonist is an autistic woman. It's a wonderful, well-written and well-acted series. Highly recommend it.

I enjoyed both "The Bridge"'s as well as "The Tunnel". I agree with your comments on the "The Bridge" and personally find that all three resonate with me and binge watched each as I encountered them. I missed your videos Quinn, but I hope things work out well for you which is more important of course.

Glad to see you back Quinn, with a brilliant and thought-provoking video. Two of the three programmes you mentioned really resonate with me. In regards to "The Bridge" (Broen/Bron), came out before I was diagnosed and I now realise why I was drawn to Saga Noren - apart from her good looks! "Severance" also reminds me of a time before my diagnosis, when I had a job at my local council. This was 10 years ago and it only lasted 6 months, mainly because I found it difficult to work in such an environment and to fit in. Mind you, I couldn't help think, even if those "personality chips" were available, it might not had worked with me - simply because no one knew I was autistic, unless there was a kind of "instant diagnosis scan"!

Funny thing. Not so long ago I watched TV Series Cloud 9 Superstore and I had similar impression about characters portrayed there as you had about chracters from Park and Recreation. It let to a new post on autistic forum I titled ''Uncanny valley' as I have never been able to connect with characters anywhere to such an extent.

Glad to see you back! Also, I love the little cartoon Quinn at the end; I don't think I've noticed that before. ^_^

Have a look at Bill Pullman in the Netflix detective drama The Sinner, and at Anya Taylor-Joy in The Queen's Gambit, where she portrays Beth Harmon, a chess prodigy. Beth is more obviously autistic than Pullman's Harry, a troubled, obsessive detective contemplating retirement and becoming embroiled in a series of dramas that test his skills. They're both extraordinarily relatable without screaming Autist at Work.

Bones would resonate to you if you like the bridge as the protagonist Brennan is very similar.

I absolutely loved Severance and thought you were going to mention Irving as being coded Autistic (his Innie is a rule follower with very black and white thinking, while his Outtie displays an equal intensity and desire for routine and repetition). I did not expect the comparison between Innie and Outtie life, but that is such a creative an excellent take on the story. One thing I love about Severance is how much they packed into a single season. It's filled with meaning, symbolism, well written characters, an intriguing story, and clearly, CLEARLY there were some detail oriented people involved on set. And that makes my heart sing.
