I absolutely love and appreciate your content. I built custom homes for 13 years running a framing crew. I built furniture on the side for fun and loved doing it, but I never thought of going after it as a side hustle until recently. I am now a director of facilities for a country club and just purchased a 12x24 barn style out building to turn into my woodworking shop. I am super excited to get started and your content is a huge help.

I think the scariest part for people getting into a craft isn't the tools so much as ruining an expensive piece of material like a special slab of wood that had a very specific grain or color match they hunted for. With new people, the risk to reward ratio is grim. Start with cheaper build materials and practice those techniques.

I actually think another few important aspects at least for me is understanding how much work to put into things, understanding that not everything has to be a revolution one of one piece and not obsessing over imperfections. Ive been a finish carpenter most of my adult life and have a lot of pride in my work and want things to be absolutely perfect. I have worked on extremely high end and expensive projects before where thats absolutely valuabe and it definitely can be with woodworking as well. But I can't tell you the number of items ive made that people have absolutely loved and cherish that all I could see was every little minute imperfection in it. As far as things like cutting boards for example, you should make them to the best of your ability and make sure to put a little bit of extra thought into anything you make. But at the same time you can't be spending 6 hours on a board you are selling for 150 and spent 60$ in materials on... It was actually a huge reason I didn't like making quick small things like cutting boards to sell because while each board had its own unique beauty due to their own individual grain and how everything came together. I personally didn't like having it become a mass manyfactured product. I also have no problem making something that is based off another project but the factory process of it just wasn't for me. I also just personally from a financial perspective would not instantly make this your primary source of income. I would save a little, make a few projects to sell, find a few customers to make some things for them, create a portfolio and get some nice photos of your work and slowly transition. There is absolutely nothing worse than not being financially stable and having to pray something sells so you can make rent. You absolutely can pay the bills with it, just do it in a smart way. Best of luck to everyone out there.

When I started building cabinets on an old version of marketplace, I didn’t even know how to build a cabinet but I had a miter saw and a brad nailer so off I went. I had to pull the ad down in 3 months because I was over-run with customers.
