The Evergreen Rhythm Game - History of Osu!

Can a rhythm game become an esport?

The year was 2007, while it may seem like any other year, some pretty big things happened that year: The first iPhone was announced, Tumblr launched to the public, and Barack Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States.

But one event that many people may not know is that 2007 was the year one of, if not the biggest online rhythm game was born, all created by a single man. A game that has withstood the test of time thanks to the contributions of not its single creator, but the constantly growing community throughout the years. That game is known as “Osu!”

Props to the Akshon team for risking their mental health by playing rhythm games

If osu is becoming more mainstream, I'm all for it. There's just so much competitive depth and history for what the game has to offer across all four gamemodes, and within its 15 year history, countless legends have made names for themselves in big ways. Vaxei's tournament dominance, the United States juggernaut, mrekk, WhiteCat, Cookiezi are just few of the many things this game has to offer. Cloud9 also closely follows the community, so there might be a gigantic shake up in the scene in the near future. Great video as always!

crazy to see this upload now of all times; i'm playing in the world cup for osu!taiko, another osu gamemode, currently! every gamemode has its own history completely separate from 'normal' osu, or osu!standard as most ppl in the community know it. for example, taiko is based on an existing rhythm game, taiko no tatsujin, but unlike the games standard is derived from taiko is VERY popular in japan, and so japan have won the last 9 (i think) taiko world cups without ever looking like losing one and have 9 of the top 10 players by rank, while i don't know too much about the other two modes, osu!catch and osu!mania, but as far as i know they're both dominated by south korea (mania is a bit more complicated once you start talking about different ways to play it, but that's for someone that knows more about the mode to explain)

Happy to see a well developed video that seems to be bringing in lots of new players to the osu scene

I laughed so hard at 6:48 when they were showing cookiezis plays and they showed his TIMEWARPED MASTERPIECE PLAY LMAO

As someone who played in the world cup and frequently plays tournaments, I think the scene still potential to grow, especially with the addition of featured artists it may be easier to get eSports team backing for tournaments that exclusively use songs from these artists. As the biggest hurdle for expansion of the scene is probably the legal/copyright issues.

14:19 Just saying, not only Varvalian got into an esports team in Japan, Cloud9 seem to follow the scene closely, so I’d expect a lot of things in future

The thing about osu! is that it allows you to create story-driven levels, just like EBA & Ouendan. I wish more people took advantage of that.

14:19 Varvalian has recently been signed to a JP esports team, so its not too far of a reach

This video brings a smile to my face.

I'm so glad my favourite game is getting featured by an incredible channel like yours, as I've been hoping for someone to cover it for a long time now.

This video is amazing, and keep up the good work <3

osu has 4 modes, all have their own comunities and tournements too, but the standard mode is definitely the biggest.

The craziest thing about osu! is that for 15 years now it has done pretty much nothing but constantly grow faster and faster.

I can’t think of another game that can say that.

This is really well researched, if it weren't for really minor things I would think this is made by someone who has been in the community for years. You got all the right people

The circle circuit that DIO (a well-known tournament organizer and commentator) organized seems like a step towards an eSports scene being made
