There is a reason why this plastic shrinks instead melts it's the way how this plastic is made.

Polystyrene or PS type 6 plastic is stretched in manufacturing process, creating tension and that tension is the one that causes that type of plastic to shrink under the heat, returning to it's original form.

The oven will heat the plastic more evenly, resulting in a smoother product much more easily. And they used to sell these things under the name Shrinkydinks. They were pre-cut and the kiddo would color them before Mom popped them in the oven to shrink up. The pack usually came with little suction cups to make the creations into window decor.
