Hi Mike - as always, great info! Just an FYI - when you adjust doubled vocals, there is a tool to make pitch/timing variations for you. It's under Edit\Add Random Deviations. Then you can choose Pitch or Timing and add Subtle/Moderate/Drastic deviations. Works well if you first select all notes (Ctrl+A) then apply the random deviations to all at the same time.

Thanks Mike. I didn't realize how the note separation tool can be employed to alter just a portion of a note. Super useful.

great vid, working on a female vox myself atm, so this could really help, with not having to travel again for a 2nd session, fab!

Great video Mike. You can deactivate Time Grid - 'Active' by pressing 'Alt'; and deactivate Pitch Grid - 'No Snap' by pressing 'Alt' if I'm not wrong

Been using Melodyne Studio for some time and it is invaluable to make my vocals sound better, more on pitch, and great to help create harmonies. Your section on separating the notes was a feature I had tried to use, but with limited success. Your section pointed out what steps I was omitting! Thanks for your work here, I always look forward to your videos, please keep them coming!!

manually adjusting things is way better I agree... quantizing, especially on faster/more "quantity-dense" vocals, really just doesn't ever work out how you want it to... btw if you don't want to turn off "Active" for the time grid, you can always press and hold ALT then drag the beginning of the note. Another great vid! I'm pretty average at using Melodyne so these tips are super helpful

Mike - terrific as usual. Is there any advantage to doubling in this way over using a plugin like the Sonnox VoxDoubler?

I've been looking for a simple tip, which so far has eluded me - how on earth do you adjust the overall playback volume? There doesn't seem to be a main playback volume control anywhere! Some tracks I have, playback too loudly, but I don't want to reduce their note volumes, I just want to turn the volume down for the whole thing .

Hey Mike,
Great refresher. Thanks for sticking your neck out and using your “real” vocals. 😊 That was excellent!

Great video Mike. I'd love to get my hands on the Studio version - currently use the basic version provided by Studio One. BTW - the trousers must have been tight for those harmonies!

Great Melodyne demo! The vocal doubling tips are mostly automated in Melodyne 5’s most complete version (Studio). Just select the notes you want to affect, and in the Edit menu, look for “add random deviations” for either pitch or timing or both. You can select one of 3 severity levels for each. I use the most aggressive ones and it works really well to create a convincing vocal double. It’s a shame that there is no option to do this with formant as well, you have to do that as you demonstrated.
