Different branches of Mormonism

**Okay we have to admit something. We filmed this episode A LONG TIME AGO and are just now releasing it! So that's why you'll see that we're using a divider -- this was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic.**

Today we are talking about the different branches of Mormonism. While the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is formally called such, it is often referred to as Mormonism. We ask to be called by the proper name, though we know that we've long been known as Mormons. Our religion started with Joseph Smith but then many different sects broke off from the original church (many claiming to be the original church). We certainly believe in freedom of religion, including different sects of Mormonism, but we also don't support all the different beliefs found within the different sects of Mormonism.

What did you learn about the different sects in Mormonism? Let us know in the comments below!

I was raised LDS, served a mission from 2012-2014 in the Idaho Boise Mission (Idaho Nampa Mission), attended BYU. In 2018 I joined Community of Christ, and am currently a Priest in Community of Christ and serving on the Pastor Team in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin congregation. I would be more than willing to have a meaningful and respectful discussion about the similarities and differences between these two Mormon denominations. It is so important that we understand each other, and make a greater effort to work together as siblings in the Restoration.

I investigated in an area with Community of Christ (RLDS) and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There are so many reasons I chose the direction I chose.

How cool would it be to have a panel with a representative from each of these churches.

Good job guys! I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ with headquarters in Pennsylvania that followed succession with Sidney Rigdon and William Bickerton. God bless

Aside from the FLDS I had NO IDEA we had branches of Mormonism. That’s neat! Thanks for all the info.

Cool show. Just started watching and barely found it. Appreciating the knowledge, fun, and talking about our beliefs in God. Thank you. It's needed in these times. I love learning about the topics.

Correction: Community of Christ stopped having a Smith as president in 1996. The position would then be given to Grant McMurray.

Hi, I'm associated with the Bickertonite church and I'm interested in talking to any living descendants of Allen Wright, the man who published the pamphlet refuting the Second Coming of Christ. He published it in 1907. If you two guys or anyone watching this video knows if there are living descendants of Allen Wright could you pls let me know? Thanks!

Independent Missouri is a unique place. I got a picture from the LDS Stake Center with the Community of Christ temple in the background - and the Temple Lot (owned by the Temple Lot Church on the other side of the block).

My brother joined the Church of Christ the same year I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1981, he was living in Michigan, I was in Alaska. I recently learned that the Church of Christ is an off-shoot of our church, my brother had no idea! I thank you for doing all this research for us! How do you suggest I invite my brother to join you for an interview?

Wow a lot of hate and negative comments. It’s okay if you disagree with others but you don’t need to be rude… this was very informative I enjoyed this.

This is actually a really disappointing video. It's just two guys who barely know anything about history describing a few splinter sects of the Latter-day Saint movement. I would appreciate a longer video, with at least a branching image of the sects, with further exposition on each extant sect.

It would be interesting to hear about these groups.

Life-long RLDS and I have met Hedrickites (Church of Christ (Temple Lot)) and the Bickertonites and the Utah LDS. Most Latter Day Saints outside of the Utah headquartered organization do not care at all about secret "temple rites" for the dead. Traditionally, RLDS practice and doctrine is the same as the original Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kirtland, Ohio, in the 1830s. This is continued today in the various independent restoration branches and use the Inspired Version of the Holy Bible, the RLDS 1908 Edition of the Book of Mormon and the RLDS Book of Doctrine and Covenants.

We should invite those who are from different branches to read D&C 115 with us.

This is why the Great Apostasy argument to Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, from LDS, makes us scratch our heads a bit. All love and respect to you guys but it confuses us a little

That map of who broke off from whom is evidence that the same thing happened to the Catholic church. Like seriously have you ever seen the graph of all the churches that broke off of the Catholic Church... That is evidence in my opinion that human beings cannot maintain the true church. End of story. If Jesus Christ had not restored the gospel we would be so lost clinging to whatever truth has survived.
