Do you think it's time to stop job hopping in your 30s? Lemme know!

Career path can take some time to figure out. I think the limited growth is a big reason why it's better to find your calling earlier than later. Great video as always.

Sorry I disagree with this. Job hopping is perfectly acceptable if you are not happy in your current work situation. If my family life is affected and I am not felt included as a working parent then job hopping is acceptable. But the clever money is to have an alternative income to back that up eg: rental income from properties or putting savings into index funds over a 8 year period to create an alternative income which you can live off.

Nothing wrong with job hopping with purpose, even through out your thirties. I went from making 35k/year to 128k. Be strategic.

You’re not wrong with anything you said. But I will admit that as a 25 year old millennial, I’m not only scared that I’ll never find my calling, but I also find these social norms pretty frustrating. I don’t think you should stay in a job just because you want it to “look good on your resume” even though you are miserable. Life is too short and you need to live for YOU before anyone else. This is why I’m starting to think self employment is the route I want to take, where I can define my own career and the decisions I make

As a HR professional, I don’t agree with much of this. Job security lmaooo, there is no such thing.

Great video, you made valid points on the cons of job hopping.

In my mid 20s I did some job hopping. Probably in 5 years I worked about 5 different jobs. Now I finally am passionate on what I am currently doing and looking to stick around long term. I would highly recommend your videos to other people. Its not always about the money or at least it should not be. I think many people will still job hop even if they got their salary expectations met.

I've seen it go both ways. If you don't leave at the end of a successful project it can hurt. If you help a team reach a huge milestone that makes a big move (read more profits) for the company, you will be seen as an asset and can move around the big 5 (FAANG) with a pay bump and promotion faster than staying put. This only works if you leave on a really good note with the last company on the tail of a big accomplishment. This may not work in other industries, but in tech projects tend to be around 12-24 months.

I've been telling my friends in their 30s to start their businesses on the side when they aren't satisfied with their 9-5 haha... would you consider that good advice Dr. Tam?

Great points. When I first started working, I didn't even realize that when people bring me over to their company, anything I did would be a reflection on them.

I agree with some of the points you raised, but I think it's important to factor in the industry a person is in and not generalise. For instance, for law graduates in India (like me) law school typically finishes when they are about 22-23 years old (sometimes even 24). That leaves one with only about 7 years to experiment with different career options before you turn 30, which for some may not be enough considering the sheer variety of practice areas and specialisations you can get into as a lawyer. This limited window is further reduced if you go in for a master's programme which usually take another year or two. By contrast, in my country, it takes a full year less to become a doctor or engineer, giving these graduates atleast a year more of on ground job experience to learn from.

Thus, for young professionals in my field, I'd say job hopping after about 33-35 may be perceived problematic -- but ideally not before.

I'll keep job hopping as long as people keep trying to shit on me. There's no job security other than pick a market where your skills are always needed. Never had a performance review. I build things for myself and other people, and I'm going to keep building things whether people like them or not

the jobs that pay well you got be smart. doctor, engineer, lawyer -- you got be good at academics. the stem fields. i never did good in academics.

I have been job hoping. I do it because I need to keep moving until I find a job I am really great at. I pray everything will work out for me until I find the position I can be long term.
