When you forget to breathe 😮

sleep apnea has many considerations under anesthesia. forgetting to breathe, or getting inadequate oxygen is just one of the many complications, which can include cardiovascular and pulmonary vasculature complications. The most important thing to know for sleep apnea after surgery and anesthesia is that it can make the dangers of opiates even higher! that means the risk of overdose is much higher with pain medications after surgery. you always need to tell your anesthesiologist and surgeon if you have sleep apnea before surgery

I have severe complex apnea...my hear actually stops. I need you when I have surgery! I have had several procedures and the anesthesiologists have been great but Never like you. One told me not to worry, we are going to breath for you! That calmed me down! Thanks for all you do!!❤

Apparently I do this a lot during my past surgeries and I do have sleep apnea. My previous anesthesiologists have told me my body likes to hold my breath after the first dose of general anesthesia and even after they put the ventilator tube in. One time I did it apparently for about 2 or 3 minutes and some change and it gave them quite a scare. They lightened the sedation and I started breathing again then they were able to put me all the way under with no problems. I've never been able to hold my breath for that long ever in my life so I was pretty shocked when they told me. For any surgeries I even have needed or will need in the future I'm always sure to tell them that I have sleep apnea and have had breath holding episodes under anesthesia before. My anesthesiologists always thank me for telling them and put a note in my chart right away. I love learning about anesthesia and anything to do with surgery and I really want to become a pediatric surgeon 👩🏽‍⚕️ hopefully one day in the near future.

What happens when you have sleep apnea and go under anesthesia? Why do they ask you to bring your CPAP machine to if they don't use o OR?

I doubt I'd survive anesthesia with my current sleep apnea, ptsd, anxiety, asthma, Gerd, depression, night terrors, sleep walking & sleep talking.

I have had 6 or 7 surgeries over tge years. I'm almost 66. I can't recall being asked by the Anesthesiologist if I have sleep apnea. Shouldn't that be a question they ask everybody before surgery?

I don't have sleep apnea, but I DID once have a dream where I was a goldfish, and every time I lifted my head out of the water, I would stop breathing. This went on for two minutes and I couldn't control my own self in the dream, but I knew I was in one.

i actually was brought out to recovery after a procedure in which it was general anestesia, i was in so much pain and after a few mins i felt a huge pop in my head around my temples n then stopped breathing on my own and couldnt even move my body i lost the ability to even blink nurses came running as i was concious and could hear them and felt the vibrations of them hitting my chest telling me to breath but after about 2 mins i suddenly start breathing again and everyone went back to normal n just left i kept asking what happened to me and all the nurses and even my Dr just kept avoiding it they wouldnt even tell me what was the medication administered so i went to get medical records and they were using toradol. has this happened to anyone

An anesthesiologist should ask me about apnea and other important stuff before a surgery, right?

I went to the hospital not that long ago for fdp surgery on my little finger one of the lady’s asked if smoked vapes or anything with nicotine and I said no then gave her a hint that I do sometimes. Because I’m 15 I didn’t really wanna tell her in front of my parents lol. You think they would have known during the surgery? I heard that it doesn’t really matter when it comes to kids
