Jazz Comping Motifs | Broken Time Drumming

In this video, I explore working with a seven beat motif in a broken time context. By taking an individual idea and becoming familiar with it, we can break it down, permutate it, and work it into a part of our core vocabulary so that we can improvise with it. Adding in a second motif can add the to the possibilities and make for a lot of improvisational material.

To demonstrate this, I begin with a 7-beat motif, and break it down into a 4 and a 3. These can be learned and practised individually, and then combined together in various orders. The essentially doubles the application from a single motivic idea.

I bought Jonathan's book 2 or 3 years ago. It is beyond excellent. From a coordination standpoint I was challenged, to say the least. Jonathan mentions in this video that he approaches drum material analytically, and this approach works well when breaking down motifs. One step at a time. Jonathan's love of the drums and his relentless pursuit of excellence is a great encouragement for us all.

Great video and nice to see the broken time material being revisited.
Something I have been wondering about was when you are, say, backing a soloist using this methodology, is it reasonably easy to put in accents and responses to their playing? Im assuming you practice different orchestration or permutations of the phrases to allow for variations?
Its making my head spin slightly thinking of playing these combinations and responding to the other musicians musically. I suppose it comes with time.... :)
