One of the primary characteristics of Bridge Stuart's work is the way he explores an issue through the refractory lens of his own inner landscape. In this case, we have become accustomed to approaching the phenomenon of toxic positivity in the context of others to the point where it becomes invisible through over-familiarity, but here Bridge Stuart's willingness to be a lamp unto himself creates detournement by exploring toxic positivity as it relates to oneself, the internalized dialogue which denies genuine empathy by manifesting the self-cruelty of onerous expectation in the face of disappointment and sadness.

The phenomenon of toxic positivity appears on the surface to be supportive; its toxicity comes from its use to wallpaper over legitimate feelings of hurt with banal sentiment. It is a dysfunctional coping mechanism which creates an attitude of denial and suppression, and here the progression is made plain through the typically Bridgian extension into absurdism, highlighting how the use of toxic positivity both denies actual emotional processing and exacerbates the situation by loading an even heavier weight of expectation through the application of toxic positivity to deal with the emotional fallout of the inauthentic repression of real trauma resulting from toxic positivity, creating a neurotic and increasingly pathological vicious circle of denial.

However, there is always a deeper layer to Bridge Stuart's fables, and those who are familiar with his lexicon of symbols will recognize his shamanic use of animals to represent the psyche, much as Jung used the metaphor of a house to explore the structure of the mind. The references here to the classically phallic snake is indicative of Bridge's closer examination of toxic positivity as a psychologically masculine phenomenon. The male nature is characterized by a logical and goal-oriented mode of interaction, and it is notably resistant to true expressions of emotion. The left-hand path is the path of internal authority, and it is this hand which becomes crippled by the phallic assault of masculinization denial of legitimate feeling. The Tao Te Ching instructs us to "know the male, yet keep to the female, " so that our own nature is always emotional and intuitive, and Bridge shows us the ultimate fruits of failing to do so, where suppressing the expression of feeling becomes increasingly dysfunctional as it not just fails to address the original problem but creates an even worse trauma response through unrealistic expectations of Stoic indifference to suffering.
