This song was played at a wonderful friend”s wedding about twenty years ago. She passed away five years ago. When I hear this song, I think of her and wish she was still with us and of how much she was loved and is sorely missed ❤

I am convinced : This song is about God through Christ Jesus. I believe, He is The Friend of all who call upon Him.

I've known this song since it first came out in like '72. I was 12. I still love it. James Taylor is so peaceful.

This song still touches me. Afters so many years...still love the simplicity of an acoustic guitar and words of simplicity that leave one in a happier place. Thanks

I heard this song a week ago and every hair stood up on my neck. I was instantly transported back to my 9 year old self. It’s bedtime and I’m huddled amongst some old musty smelling cream wool blankets, I’m alone in a pitch black room. There’s a creaking around me and a whistle of wind coming in through the cracked rickety window. Theres a scratching noise behind the skirting boards. Usually scary but insignificant now compared to the excruciating throbbing pain in my heart that keeps taking my breath away. My whole body ached like never before. I need my daddy to pick me up and hug me . I need to snuggle against him while smelling his soft warm jumper. I need to push my face into his to kiss him and for him to kiss me right back even with just stubbly chin The nuns at my school had said miracles exist. So I prayed while I sobbed for God to return my daddy back to me or to take me to him. I knew he wouldn’t leave me without a goodbye .I screamed into the pillow covering it with tears, mucus and spit . My jaw hurt so badly. I wept until my head felt like it would explode. I needed my daddy more than anything in the world. I knew he’d come back, he just wouldn’t leave me .. he would send me a message I wasn’t sure how. I hid under the blankets scared a monster would come . Under my pillow was an old tranny radio. Battered and old with a dial to try to find a station . My mother had told me if I listened to it at night the a policeman would come and shout at me and we would get into trouble. . So I’d hidden it well. Under the covers I’d try to tune it in . The reception was iffy, muffled voices and crackles over music, voices came and went I was hoping my dad might talk to me through the little old radio . His voice might just come if I listened intently .
The pain in my heart battered and bruised me. I wondered if it was possible to die under my blankets and God lift me up through the world to my daddy. As I turned the nob on the battered paint stained radio suddenly this song came on and spoke to my pain . The words entered my mind and my broken heart. They soothed something in me as the ends of my fingers chewed broken nails throbbed to the music . The words in the song told me my daddy was always with me . He was still here he was my friend I just couldn’t see him.
It’s impossible to convey how much this song comforted and spoke directly to me. Talking about my dad’s death was not an option at that time . I was left to find my own way to process the pain.
James Taylor I thank you so very much for offering something to me to hold on to.

When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, oh, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night
You just call out my name
And, you know, wherever I am
I'll come running, oh, yeah, baby
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you've got to do is call
And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah
You've got a friend
If the sky above you
Should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud now
Soon I'll be knocking upon your door
You just call out my name
And, you know, wherever I am
I'll come running, oh, yes, I will
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall, yeah
All you've got to do is call
And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah
And ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold?
They'll hurt you and desert you
Well, they'll take your soul if you let them
Oh, yeah, but don't you let them
You just call out my name
And, you know, wherever I am
I'll come running
To see you again
Oh, baby don't you know 'bout
Winter, spring, summer or fall
Hey, now, all you've got to do is call
Lord, I'll be there, yes, I will
You've got a friend
You've got a friend, yeah
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend?
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend?
Oh, yeah, yeah, you've got a friend

I'm a Christian, years ago when I was going through a dark period in my life I happened to be walking through a store and this song was playing, to me it was Jesus reaching out to me through this song telling me everything was going to be ok
