Fabulous video. Working your way down from the melody note is so obvious but not intuitive. Opens up all possibilites. As you said, let your ear dictate. Thanks for this video.

Do you eventually get these decisions “into your fingers” so you can play them spontaneously in the song without taking the time to think about which USTS to use? Or is it realistic only to incorporate them ahead of time into a planned arrangement?

Great lesson, Willie! A lot of these upper structure voicings resolve nicely to a polychord where you play the I in the left hand and the II major in the right, or if you're looking for something a little spookier, the I in the left hand and the VII major in the right. In both cases, use either a stride 10th voicing or a 3-7 shell in the left hand to keep it from getting muddy. Still looking for ways to use polychords outside of just dominant and tonic.

How about with the Eb7 in the second measure playing Eb in the bass, a seventh above to Db and above that the 2nd inversion of the F major triad which of course has the A melody note. I like this song as a basis for experimenting. M

Great lesson and explanation. When one says they are harmonizing the melody, is that the same as what you did with the UST’s on melody for Days of Wine and Roses?

Is it not possible to play the sharp 5 as a minor just like u did with the flat 5's and 3's?

over Eb7# 11 I played right hand: (because of your next one Db-E-G-C(melodie)Dim-maj7 and over D7(L.H.) F-Bb-D E-A-C# Eb-AbC or even more brutal: F#-A#-D(resolves to C#) F-A-C# to E-A-C to E Ab-C (E resolving downwards to Eb) maybe you find this too much>?
