Paiste 2002 Cymbals: Good or Bad?

As a longtime drummer I have heard many a great cymbal, but sadly these PAiSTe’s are not two of them. I review a 15’’ and 16’’ crash and explain my reasoning as best as I can. Not hating on the brand, just the hype surrounding these sub-par cymbals. Could these be worse than Zildjian A Customs?!? Let’s find out!!!

The cymbals sound fine. My advice is go watch The Synchronicity Concert and see how Stewart Copeland incorporated 16 and 18 inch 2002s. Watch his flurries across his set up.

Has to do with small sizes. The 2002s shine from 17” and up for crashes.

You have no idea what you’re talking about

Did you like the sound of Jeff Parcarro, Stewart Copeland, John Bonham?

I've collected almost a full set of second hand 2002's - 14" Sound Edge hats, 22" crash, 22" heavy ride - and I'm very pleased with them.

I already own pieces from the Signature, Formula 602, Dimensions, 900 Series, PST8, and Swiss Alphas, mainly because all of these Paiste series contain cymbals that blend seamlessly with other series. The 2002's are similarly versatile

All Paiste cymbals do not sound the same, that’s ridiculous, they are designed to sound the same or very close within each series, but not within the broad & beautiful range of the line, , The best sounding cymbals IMO, especially the signatures series…..

It’s cause you got the small cymbals 🤣 try a 19 or 20 2002 thin crash your welcome

You shouldnt say something is bad just because it doesnt meet your taste.
Regarding Paistes sounding the same - that can be a big plus if you break a model that you really liked, you can get a new one and it will still sound as good. Try replacing an old K or any of the hand made turkish stuff

I've owned paiste cymbals since I was 18. Now 58.. owned 1 Zildjian back in the day, then got rid of it never to look back.. prices are a little high but for great sound I'll pay for craftsmanship, quality, and sound any day.. Cutting through live band sounds on stage in the rock and roll world and the sounds they give in a recording situation are unbelievable.. I would rather not play anything else but paiste cymbals..by NO means do their cymbals sound alike. Maybe get your hearing check and try again to listen to them and all the series with paiste.. Great Cymbals!!

If you are in 2002 you shouldn’t buy smaller than 17“. I have a set of 18“: thin, crash, medium. That rocks. Smaller sizes sound rather like splashes.

I"ve heard Paiste 2002's for years and they usual sound great! Many classic rock guys use them and they really fit the music well. Perhaps in a practice room they don't sound like you would want them to.

Wait, you don’t like Custom A’s either?? Aren’t they the most recorded symbols in music all around??
I used to use a 14” hi hat and 22” ride in 2002 and they sounded awesome.
Like most comments here, I think the bigger 2002’s sound way better than the small crashes. Those cymbals are pretty thick.

Paiste Cymbals seem to be best suited to a recording studio. They do all have a "naturally EQ'd" sound.

I own a bunch of Paiste 2002 cymbals including 22" and 20" rides along with a 19" and two 18" crashes (one thin), and 15" Sound Edge but I get what you're saying and agree.

I love the 2002s in bigger sizes.... but not so much anything 16" or smaller. They just start sounding more like splashes than crashes to me.... too high pitched and tinny.

The best 16" I ever played, and still own, is a Sabian AAX brilliant.... which opens up nicely at the slightest tap and has an unbelievable swell to it.

Happy drumming! :)

Simply put, the 2002's cut through the mix in a way that can be heard and that sit within that mix perfectly. Especially in the rock genre. Personally, my favorites are the Giant Beats, but the 2002's cut through and sit in the rock mix better in my opinion.

If you think they're terrible it's probably because you're judging on the smallest sized crashes. 2002's excel in larger sizes. But try recording them: they sound FAR better than most other cymbals in a recording situation.

In my opinion, the worst sounding cymbal in your set is the hi-hat pair. The crashes - although I don't like 15s or 16s and I do not like so much the 2002 crash sound - sound reasonably good. But when I hear the sound when you close the hi-hat at minute 4:29, it makes me sick. And the fact that the same models of Paiste cymbals sound similar (they sound similar, 100% they don't sound the same) is not ridicolous but intentional. If you break a cymbal with your favourite sound, then you have the option of buying the same model and can assume that it sounds somehow similar.
