This is one of those comfort foods that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside especially on a cold winter's day. It's easy to make and so delicious. Enjoy.

Ingredients
1 cup sago soaked in water
1 litre milk
2 Cinnamon sticks
2 pinches ground cardomon (or 2 whole cardomon)
1 cup sugar (or to taste)
1 Tablespoon custard powder mixed with 1/4 cup milk.
2 tsp vanilla essence (or to taste)
4 eggs
12 nobs of butter (optional)
Cinnamon powder to sprinkle

Method

Soak 1 cup sago in water until swollen & double in size
Heat 1 Litre Milk on medium heat.
Add sago, stick cinnamon & cardomon
Stir until slightly thickened up.

Add sugar & stir
Mix custard powder to 1/4 cup milk.
Add to Sago mixture.
Cook until sago is translucent & thickened up.
Remove from the stove & transfer mixture to a bowl to cool down.
Add 2 teaspoons vanilla essence (or to taste)

Whisk 4 eggs in a separate bowl.
Temper the eggs with the sago mixture: Example

Add about 2 TBLSP sago mixture to the eggs very slowly.
This is to equalize the temperature of the two mixtures (to avoid curdling).
Then add egg mixture to the sago mixture in the bowl & stir.

Spray a baking dish with cooking oil or butter it.
Transfer sago mixture to a baking dish.
Scatter approx 12 little knobs of butter over dish.
Sprinkle cinnamon over dish.

Cook in oven on 180degrees for about 45min.
Cook until nice and golden brown

Notes:

Sago taste like nothing so you want to add flavour
If you short on eggs just add a few TBLSP custard powder.
Also, if sago is abit on the thin side add 1 or 2 tablespoon custard powder mixed with approx 1/4 cup milk.
The custard will help to set the pudding.
Its imortant not to add your eggs to a hot mixture otherwise you will get scramble eggs.

Making sago now to the tune of the falling Cape Town rain - 26 August 2021
I use a 500 gram packet and able to make 2 and a small bowl of sago as I've found this dish tastes even better when shared. Such a heart warming reminder of my childhood because this was my mother's go-to pudding in winter.
I swear that your friendly-voice tone is an unmistakeable, vital ingredient to all the recipes you share, Fatima. Thank you.

Your accent and cooking style makes me homesick. I just have to watch you cook and the aromas and tastes come back to me. Ex-pat now in Canada.

OMG, you have just awoken the beast. That sago pudding brings back the fondest childhood memories. Thank you so much for the inspiration and allowing us into your humble home to experience the nostalgia. Your descriptions actually make me taste and smell the foods that you prepare. You make cooking look so easy and again, you are so real, so relatable and just absolutely WOW.

Salaam Fatie en Jumua Mubarak from me here in Windhoek, Namibia. Believe me I'm as Capetonian as the South Easter is a moerse wind. but to be more precise I'm Cape Malay inside and out. I loved my smoortjies and bredies, roti & kerrie on a Saturday afternoon, Aunty Joggie se koesiesters on a sunday morning (and if i say morning i mean 6 o clock in die oggend) but hey that was growing up on the Cape flats.
I was born in the Districk 6, started primary school (sub A & sub B) then the move started, I ended up by my Ouma Hadji Fatiema in Salt River ( ALLAH GRANT HER A HIGH PLACE IN JANNAH AMEEN) where i stayed till the end of my primary school days. My memories of Salt River is filled with "Walk aways in tamatie" gebraaide skaapkop, lentil kerrie, frikadel met gesmoore tamatie en wit rys but my favorite back then was the tripies to Rhodes where we went to collect danebolle (dennebolle or pinecones if you like) came back home steel Ouma se suiker om tamaletjies te maak. Moving on I started High School in Lentegeur M\Plain. Being a big boy now i had to see to myself in the afternoons after school, as mom was working. That is when i realised that i needed to cook to staty alive. (yor was ek gedonner vir die state van daai kombuis) anyway my mother always made favorite foods like Pens kerrie, suikerboontjie bredie, Long kos, haaslag and hoender.
Its going on 2years that im here in Namibia and i really miss the food more than food that i genuinely lus for is Long kos. as djy weet hoe om daai te maak dan kanala maak n video as ek moet dan sal ek die geld stuur vir die ingredients..lol.
Shukran love you lots

Just discovered yoour channel. I am so excited... I have been lokkimg for a good sago pudding recipe for ages. This was my favourite pudding as a child. Who else remembers trying to squish sago pearls in theor mouths at the table, trying not to make a noise or let the sauce projectile fly across the table right into your strict Afrikaans Tannie's eye?

Wonderful pudding this. Some useless info: Did you know sago comes from one of the most poisonous plants on Earth the Sago Cycad. It is derived from the juice of the roots and left to dry until a powder is left and then processed to become the sago as we know it. The length of time it takes for the drying process assists with the removal of toxic chemicals in the juice. It is a long interesting process!

I love that you tip over the bowl to pour pudding out. I always get so frustrated when they laddle it spoon by spoon and leave almost half of the pudding/batter in the bowl 😂
