Hello dolls, 🌼
and welcome to "The World of 1960s It-Girls"!

Unlike the screen sirens and pin-up girls of earlier decades, the '60s It Girls weren’t merely admired for their beauty. They were cultural icons in their own right, breaking the rules, setting trends, and embodying the rebellious spirit of a generation hungry for change. From the mod look of Twiggy to Edie Sedgwick’s avant-garde appeal, each It Girl of the 1960s was unique in her appeal making the whole world wanting to follow her on each one of her adventures.

As the 50s ended, feminism’s second wave took hold, as women had joined the workforce, gained independence and began making their own money. In the 1960s, women were seeking more freedoms, which meant being less inclined to settle into marriage. This new feminine ideal was dubbed the “Single Girl”.
The Single Girl represented movement, was economically independent and had her own career. Fashions of the time reflected this new trend, and the ‘Working Girl” became the target demographic for magazines and clothing companies. The Single Girl defined femininity outside of the traditional patriarchal construction that was laden through previous decades.

Some of the first It girls of the decade were the Beatle girls, the wives and girlfriends of the bend members especially Pattie Boyd who truly embodied the essence of a 1960s "It Girl“. Her striking beauty, unique style, and cultural influence, extended far beyond her role as a model and she became a role model for many younger girls wanting to be and look just like her. Pattie simply had IT.

Women like Marianne Faithfull, Edie Sedgwick, Anita Pallenberg, Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Sharon Tate and many more laid the groundwork for a whole trajectory of women simply known for being fabulous and having IT!

The "It Girls" of the 1960s left behind a legacy that was as bold and diverse as the decade itself. Figures like Marianne Faithfull, with her haunting voice and rebellious spirit, and Edie Sedgwick, the captivating muse of Andy Warhol’s Factory, shaped a generation with their distinct looks and unapologetic lifestyles. Each of these women challenged the status quo, redefining beauty, freedom, and self-expression.

Their stories reflect a moment in time when boundaries in fashion, music, and art were pushed, often shattered, by those willing to live beyond convention. The 1960s It Girls embodied the freedom and complexity of their era, a decade brimming with cultural revolutions, where youth embraced new identities, and individuality reigned supreme. As they moved into the next phase of their lives, many of these women continued to evolve, some fading into quieter lives, others facing public struggles or reinventions. Yet, for a time, they were each a dazzling, unrestrained force that captured the world's imagination, painting the decade in shades of independence and fearless glamour.

All my lovin,
xx Emma 💌

I graduated high school class of 1971 so was aware of these glamorous women. It’s important to remember that it was still a tough time for women even for a tough cookie like Anita Pallenberg. You could be a “muse” or run the house where the band was staying because you spoke French or even cowrite a song with your musician boyfriend but without formal credit had no hope of sharing in the profits.

I appreciate these videos so much. I’m writing a book set in the 60s and 70s and fashion is heavily a part of it. You’re a great resource for my research!

Peggy Lipton from The Mod Squad - we all wanted to look like her. Julie Christie, and Marlo Thomas from That Girl.

Such an entertaining video Featuring so many cultural icons! Style, talent and glamour in abundance. Blow up i love that film. A cracking album from the 90's is called, The it girl. By a female fronted british band called sleeper, featuring great guitar pop songs like, sale of the century, what do i do now?, statuesque, and nice guy eddie. Between the buttons album on your stereo🔥! Apparently they had been in the studio all night before the album cover photo shoot taken early the next morning. 🙋‍♂️

All these girls are beautiful!!! My favorite fashion muses of the bunch are Sharon Tate and Marianne Faithfull. I love Marianne’s hair in Girl on a Motorcycle! I even considered cutting my hair like her once, but my hairstylist, at the time, discouraged me from doing it because it ‘doesn’t suit me’. I love Marianne Faithfull’s songs from the 60s. The songs that come to mind are “Paris Bells, Tommorrow’s Calling, With You In Mind, and In My Time of Sorrow”. Marianne Faithfull, in an interview, said Andrew Oldham wanted to make her the England’s answer to Francoise Hardy.

By the way, I love Sharon in Fearless Vampire Killers and The Valley of The Dolls.

In the late 70s, I was living in Colorado, where it gets very cold in the winter, and I swore myself I would never work a job where I had to wear a dress. Everywhere wanted me to wear a dress, including the bank. I ended up writing about rock ‘n’ roll for a living, so I never had to wear a dress when it was freezing

My mom was born in 62, as a kid her "It Girl" was her older neighbor Montaigne, who taught the neighborhood girls how to make colored nail polish by mixing clear polish and food coloring ❤ later on my mom was a muse of sorts for a locally successful band, and she got the nickname Star for her favorite pair of Levi's that had a leather star on the butt.

Anita Pallenberg changed the lyrics for Gimme Shelter and played a villain in Barberella. She's my favorite It girl. Pretty, pretty, pretty. I like Marianne Faithfull too because she is an ancestor of the Marquis de Sade.

The biggest change between 1960s "It girls" and those from previous generations was they were SKINNY and less glamourous. Previous generations, that wore high-end evening wear, red rouge and lipstick, and hair styled up off the shoulders, became more natural or down-to-earth, with long straight hair with heavy fringe or very short pixie cuts or bobs. Heavy eye makeup, including eyeliner, bold coloered monochrome shadow, and false-lashes contrasted with light or no cheek and lip colors.
