Red Duroc pigs are a good breed. My late Mother who lived on a farm in the 1930's, had a half Small Boned White Poland China and half Duroc sow named "Sister". She was a 600 lb. hog, but not like the Cheshire White "Mega-Pigs" that can go 2500 lbs.!!! Red Durocs have really good tasting meat, that rarely gets strong or stringy, or flavorless like mega-pigs. I'm a "city boy" but I learned about animal husbandry from my Great-grandparents and Grandparents and friends. I used to have chickens in my backyard. Their meat didn't taste anything like what they sell in supermarkets, nor did their eggs.

Wow, thank you for igniting my interest in Duroc once again. I have kept the breed (not certain if it was pure duroc) before and am looking to keeping pigs again on my homestead. I am therefore exploring/researching on which breed to keep now and, you have made a tempeting case for duroc. Thank you.

Wow!
This is absolutely amazing. I'm starting a small pig farm in my compound next month by God's grace with 3 Durcoc females in nigeria 🇳🇬. Thanks for sharing ❤

Was it bantu pigs or warthogs that were bred into these durocs? I find it hard to believe it was warthogs as pictured in this video.

I raise 2-3 pigs a year as meat for my family. I have heard about Durocs for quite some time now, but they seem to be very difficult to find in So. California. I would love to find some in my area, any leads would be greatly appreciated! This was another great video about Durocs, thank you!

Fwiw, in Animal Farm, Napoleon is said to be a Berkshire pig. These pigs look like bulldogs and have an imposing appearance, so it makes sense Orwell chose them out of any breed to represent totalitarianism. I doubt they can lead a rebellion against farmers though.

meishan are better. they actually have marbled fat in their meat. their meat is far more red, matching beef's redness, they are far more friendly whereas a duroc might bite your fingers off or eat your chickens. meishan are better are foraging, can eat more woody plants. they have bigger litters. they are a more manageable sized pig so you don't have to by as costly heavy duty fencing, and their meat is highly priced enough due to it's quality that one can charge a premium for their pork.
