In the midst of the tumultuous Napoleonic era, Frenchman Edmond Dantes (Robert Donat) is charged with a trumped-up crime and sent to prison. But after years of confinement, he escapes, and in the process secures a vast fortune hidden away on the island of Monte Cristo, off the Italian coast. Rebranding himself as a man of nobility and means, Edmond aims to settle scores with traitorous former friend Mondego (Sidney Blackmer) and the others who took his freedom and his fiancée (Elissa Landi).

I have watched every production of this movie that I have found, and read the book, in the past year and a half. I have watched this production twice before and am watching it now. I believe this is my favorite. It is a bit condensed, but if memory serves, it is pretty true to the outline of the book. There was a lot of quality acting in this, and Donat was an excellent Count and Dantes. Richard Chamberlain was pretty good in his production, also. I enjoy the black and white of old movies. It adds to the noir of dark portions of movies like this.

What a horrible experience for Dante, horrible!
Very few would have survived!
The pain Mercedes endured believing he was dead, yet she never
stopped loving him!
Then all of the putting on aires in order to fulfill his plans against his enemies!
These circumstances were EXTREMELY difficult!

This story, so often read and re-imagined on screen, is a story that repeats itself in our modern times. Political and/or emotional persecution and prosecution continue. Businesses, schools, universities, and especially politics are liberally infused with such events. It destroys life, liberty, and the right to pursue happiness. I've been the recipient of such. Because I dared suggest children can and do pretend to be ill in school. But there is a strong monetary incentive to NOT investigate such an occurrence in the school setting, regardless of published research. That said, my persecution is nothing like what we are now experiencing in politics. This age-old story is worth seeing, over and over and over again. Re-imagined to today's terrible political environment.

Would that be too much of a hustle to add subtitles?
