I read about that earlier, and as far as I remember those North Korean 100 dollar bills were even of a better quality than the original ones

You are forgetting one thing. The old US 100 dollar bills at that time had less security in them, and actually didn’t even have the security strips in them until 1990. So it probably was easier to counterfeit them at that time.

In 1996 the $100 bill was updated after nearly 100 years without new security features. Before that they used the 1914 design of the $100 bill. So it wasn't as difficult as you described. The magnetic inc wasn't needed until far into the 21 century when the old bills were becoming unusual to see in circulation.

the only way to tell they are fake is that they added a missing line to a lamppost, thinking they had a messed up reference bill, and that the line should've been there.

Counterfit money is surprisingly easy to make. You don't even necessarily need the right paper, you just need to coat it so that the counterfit pens can't react to starch, and so it looks, feels and sounds like a real note.

Fun fact: these super dollars were so perfect that they even covered up mistakes and design elements on the dollar bill making them almost identical to the real thing!
