WALDEN: LIFE IN THE WOODS is a radical re-imagining of Henry David Thoreau’s classic "Walden." Taking place over twenty-four hours, the film interlaces three contemporary narratives about the trappings of 21st century life and the unlikely heroes who dream dangerously of escape.
An elderly Alice, haunted by visions of her late husband, yearns to uncover riddles from her past, and break free from the walls of her dementia—and her nursing home. Alice’s grandson, Guy, is led by his lover, Luke, on a hike through the Rocky Mountains and into parts of himself he dares not confront. After his benefits get cut from his job at the nursing home, family-man Ramirez struggles through the morass of his crumbling American dream—mortgage, health insurance, failing home appliances—and spends a day battling the bureaucratic inferno of civilized society, desperate to keep his family afloat.
The three narratives merge in a moment of spiritual epiphany at three “ponds” where the characters confront what Thoreau thought was ultimately more profound than the wilderness: our inner wild.
