preview_player
Показать описание
In this #LotR films and books differences episode we switch to Gandalf's perspective. He meets Radagast and Saruman and travels to Isengard. We also talk about the #lore of the Palantíri (Seeing-Stones), Orthanc and why Gandalf went to Saruman in the first place, while Frodo and his Hobbit friends and Aragorn (Strider) make their way to the Weathertop. We also look at the battle between the Istari and how Saruman came to live in Isengard, but also his voice. A lot of topics for one episode, but we still have to continue with Gandalf's perspective next episode.

Cristopher Lee was so iconic in this role, his appearence on screen was commanding. A combination of phisical presence, great acting and that voice. Loved every second of it, but if i had to pick one i'd choose the scene when the camera zooms to him screaming in quenya on top of Orthanc to command the weather on Caradhras. Thanks for the video, great entertainment as always :D

I'm subscribed to a few Tolkien lore sites, but yours are by far the best! Your attention to detail and research really shines through. Thank you for another great video! Keep up the hard work. It's greatly appreciated.

I watched the movies before I read the books, but in a way, I'm glad I did because the movie's adaptation of Saruman (with Christopher Lee killing it as Saruman) made me appreciate his character even more. If I remember correctly, Saruman was first mentioned in the Council of Elrond but he doesn't appear until the end of the second book in the "Voice of Saruman" chapter -- which I thought was a bit odd. I liked how we got to see Saruman scheming in the movies. I also liked how it was Saruman that was bringing down Caradhras, since it was never confirmed in the books.

Whenever I get to an end of each of these episodes I get sad. Even if we know a lot of this information, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s obvious how much work you put into getting all of the screenshots, the quotes, and the research ready. Your videos are awesome, dude!

Even though Saruman’s character is highly compressed in the films, I still think that Christopher Lee did a great job playing him. He had that arrogant yet intelligent aura about him.

I recently found this channel and I've been binging ever since. I've read lotr books and watched the movies but I didn't realize how much I was missing by not reading the silmarilion. Thanks for the push and for such beautiful and detailed videos.

Another smashing success of work buddy. Your knocking them out at quite a pass recently pal, for most people that makes there work drop in quality but yours are still just as great an maybe even better than normal tbh but that's just my opinion about it. Keep up the great work man. Cheers.

I like the subtlety of "fights" with "magic" as Tolkien describes them. Gandalf is somehow defeated, though no blow is landed. Just as the re-born Gandalf later defeats Saruman and casts him from the Order. The use of speech, or song, to create or dominate is fascinating.

During the filming of the duel between Gandalf and Saurman, one of the stunt doubles accidently hit his head on the metal part of the trampoline used for when the wizards falling on the floor. For the part when Saruman spins Gandalf around before sending him into the ceiling of the tower, a cable were attached to a stuntman's leg, attached to a crane which made him spin around on the floor (the cable was digitally painted out in post). Ian McKellen says he doesn't know who got sent into the ceiling but sure to say it wasn't him who did it. The scene was directed by co-producer Rick Porras, one of many second unit directors including Fran Walsh, Barrie Osbourne, Christian Rivers, Geoff Murphy and John Mahaffie.

13:38 The Palantir of the White Tower is mentioned by Denethor in Return of the King. It is also unclear which Palantir Aragorn uses once there, it could have been either the White Tower's or Orthanc's. Also missed here, in the book this happens in the Two Towers with the stone at Helm's Deep's.

The part of the wall of Isengard and it's gate was a miniature but unlike Orthanc which was added through bluescreen (including the steps that Christopher Lee walks down on) it was mounted in front of the camera to line up with the background. This can be seen on the Limited Edition DVDs (all included in the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Blu-ray box).
As this was the first scene filmed with Christopher Lee and have been in around 200 films at that point, after 10 takes he thought it was a bit strange that Peter Jackson asked after so many takes to get the scene right. After about 11 or 12 takes Lee voiced his concern to Ian McKellen who replied "Oh, don't worry about that. I had 24 takes the other day and it was only a couple of lines.". Jackson being a perfectionist director when it comes to the acting, is nitpicky about how certain words in a dialoude should be said in the scene, therefore requiring a lot of takes in order to get the way he wanted (which most director doesn't consindering how long it takes to set up a scene, especially when this was when they still used 35 mm film unlike all digital filming of today). Lee got accustomed to this afterwards.
