Victor has more funk, flea has more punk

If Flea heard any human being try to say that Victor Wooten was less funky, he would have a really good laugh.

Victor is totally on another level. He can play any style ever.

Victor’s more funk, but Flea’s pretty great in his own way.

Just to address people hating on Flea in this comment section, Flea opened up what it meant to be a bass player to a lot of people when—back then—bass in rock music, was often kinda boring, not very adventurous bass lines.

He definitely got me and some people of that era, thinking about bass differently, picking up bass magazines, learning about musicians like Jaco, Marcus, and all the crazy good funk, jazz fusion artists, straight jazz artists, RNB, Gospel, classic rock, etc.

Virtuoso musicians were kinda niche to a lot of people; they weren’t on MTV or on the radio. Mostly, only other musicians knew bass heroes.

Flea as a musician, is an integral part of a band dynamic, and they leave room for each other, and no they’re not Chick Corea Electric Band, and I get that some people don’t like RHCP, but not every band is the same.

Speaking of boring root-note bass lines, U2’s _With or Without You_ bass line is frigging great! There isn’t a rule.

Be moved by what moves you.

Can’t think of many things that matter less. Two great bass players that bring the funk…the end.

Victor is probably the best bassist alive and I'm sure flea would agree

Not that Flea isn’t funky as all hell, but Victor embodies funk. Flea (as part of RHCP) has always been more about bringing funk conventions into alt/rock music. Victor Wooten is a top 3 funkiest man alive

It's not even a little debate! Victor 💯

Victor is definitely the more technical player, but I gotta go with Flea. Vic seemed more jazzy if anything, but I know Victor could easily play all of Flea's lines

i honestly believe if you arent a bassist you simply just can't enjoy victor wooten, im saying this as a bassist myself. but flea is pretty easy to enjoy even for non bassist and i really take that fact into consideration while considering if theyre the best bassist or even a good one.

I love that everyone in the comments is just accepting that they're both amazing musicians

Main thing that people underestimate when it comes to grove is tempo, at faster tempos it can be harder to hear the nuances and the "in the pocket" feel and at the right tempo (slower rather than faster) it automatically sounds groovier and funkier
