I was a theatre major in undergrad. There is an extremely toxic culture in this field where being a “starving artist” is glorified. Trying other things or having a backup plan means you “don’t want it bad enough” and that there’s always someone who wants it more that will take your place. This is also a degree where the cost is high and there is absolutely no guarantee that you will make any money, and even if you get a job, it’s unstable and temporary.
The arts can be so toxic and I’m so glad I’m not doing that anymore. Thank you for discussing a HEALTHY balance between passion and realism.

This is why I went into the military first before choosing a degree. It’s a good time to think before deciding on what to do for a career and still get that free education. Killing two birds with one stone.

Big 3 mistakes: Not understanding how loans work/taking out a HUGE loan assuming it would be easy to pay back, 2nd mistake: Not asking Why am I even going to a 4 year college? Is a better fit for me right now a 2 year degree or some trade school classes for a certificate the better option for me? Would waiting 2 or 3 years before jumping into a 4 year school better? Last mistake: NOT attending community college and taking those gen eds EVERYONE has to take regardless of major (example English 101, Intro to Psycology, Stress Management 100) Calculus 200 is calculus 200, regardless if taken at po dunk jr college or Big Name 4 year school. The only difference is the price. 45 credits at my local community college will set you back about 10 grand-and thats before any type of aid kicks in. 45 credits at big name school?? 30 grand, if not more.

I thought I would have a "good plan" when I choose my career. Last year I graduated from that. I did two biggest mistakes as you said in the video: I follow my passion (in a bad way) and also I did not really have a good plan for it. Now I'm in that process of knowing myself and my strength in order to really know what to do with my life. I'm doing volunteers, working in different areas, also I build a nonprofit organization. My advice to everyone is to do a lot of things...

I just graduated senior highschool but I wasn't able to go college this year because of financial issues. It really gave me a major depression because of the feeling of being left behind. I can actually enroll to a public university but I realized that I didn't really know what to take on college. My first choice was civil engineering but there are a lot of factors that discourage of this course. I thought of many other courses and I thought it will be my final decision but at the end of the day I wasn't able to decide. Overall, I didn't fully blame our situation that we have no money for college. I realized that I have these thoughts all along that I was not ready and I still need time to figure things out. I realized that it was good that I didn't take college right away. I want to think first what I really want to pursue and do a lot of research about it. I want to have a plan because I don't want to regret and waste time. I want to know my career path and be happy and successful with it. So I'm very thankful sir Shane for this video. Now you helped me ease my depression. I'm really thankful.☺️

That statistic you said about 70k per year being maximum happiness is outdated and mis-quoted. Plus accounting for inflation based on when that stat was created, it should be up around 90k per year

The help this channel brings to the youth and anyone who is interested in following a certain career is incredible, keep up the good work, I wish I had known this channel earlier, surprises me that in my school it was not mentioned

I love the point about how "following your passion" is bad advice. So very true.

Seeking people out in careers one is interested in is kinda hard now due to the COVID-19 pandamic. I have been trying to job shadow recently, and it's important to keep trying.

I graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering a few months after the accrediting board put them on probation due to a lack of lab space for the students. Basically, announcing to the whole world my degree is substandard. So, I have regrets about my education.

Not getting the best quality I could afford. That was a huge mistake.

Hey Shane! I’m new to your channel but I’ve been binging a bunch of your videos! I see you have a strong community, and I imagine it’s impossible to answer everyone’s questions at the level you’ve gotten too… I feel that your channel, brand, and community could really benefit from a Discord Group! It would really help build a strong sense of community, help people find answers/help others, and open up another stream of income for you!

Consider it :)

Coursera helped a lot in finding out what I'm good at.

Thanks, Shane for your honesty and helpful insight yet again. I definitely agree that turning your passion into a career can kill the passion for it. A big reason why it's your passion is because you don't have supervisors dictating it (or clients highly influencing it if you're an entrepreneur- no such thing as working for yourself.)

While more money past a certain point won't make you happier in the short term, being able to retire earlier (or even at all) almost certainly will.

I think you'd give a more credible impression if your thumbnails' expressions weren't that exaggerated.

I’m starting to feel like I made the hobby issue. I like video games. I like doing 3D modeling. I am in the process of a game design major from my University.

But I had a job over the summer doing 3D modeling for a game and really struggled with it. I’m not sure why. I don’t know if it was more about a lack of passion for the project or working from home with fairly bad ADD.

But now I’m starting to worry that I went after something purely because I enjoy it. I hope I don’t end up truly hating it and or hate gaming from it.
