Felix Mendelssohn Cello Sonata No. 2 in D major, Op. 58 Complete HD Full Complete all movements was composed in June 1843. The work, which was dedicated to the Russian/Polish cellist Count Mateusz Wielhorski, has four movements:
Allegro assai vivace
Allegretto scherzando
Adagio
Molto allegro e vivace
A typical performance lasts 25 minutes.
Of particular interest is the Adagio, because it mirrors Mendelssohn's fascination with the music of J. S. Bach. (He was then musical director of the Gewandhaus concerts at Leipzig and, as such, Bach's distant successor.) The movement consists of a chorale in Bach's typical style, played by the piano in rich arpeggios. In between the phrases of the chorale, the cello plays recitative-like passages.

Is not only the cellist the important artist, the pianist is as important as the cellist. It would not be bad if you named him in the video. Is Gérard Wyss

Superb playing by Gérard Wyss, piano and Antonio Meneses, cello. The adagio [12:55] is astonishingly beautiful and majestic, thanks particularly to Wyss. It is important to list all chamber players, especially for duos like this!

Pieces like this are really duos. Each part is as important as the other each taking its turn accompanying the other and the thematic material is at times beautifully interwoven. It is a Sonata for 'Cello and Piano (or Piano and 'Cello).

Who is the brilliant pianist?? How shameful that they "forgot" to include them here. If anything they are the true artists of the recording!

Once again the wonderful pianist on whom this cellist relies in this work is not acknowledged. It is so often the case that the pianist works twice as hard with more than double the notes to play in a sonata like this but does not share the credits! A beautiful performance by both here.

The pianist is Gérard Wyss. And I definitely agree; I'm playing this piece right now, and the piano part is so much more difficult than the cello part, and it really pulls the whole piece together.

Excellent, Meneses at his best (when is this from?)! Real chamber music.

I cannot help but wonder what the virtuostic characteristics of a viola might do to this in a direct transposition.

How does the third sound like JSBach ? It really doesnt at all to my ears. Someone point me to something similar by Bach?

Love this recording.

But I don't love how the pianist is left out as artist. The truth is the cellist is really nothing without the pianist here. In fact, the pianist should be listed as the first artist.

Why on earth did Mendelssohn write the piano accompaniment so incredibly difficult?? It’s not supposed to be the star here. Maybe he should have called this “Sonata for Cello and Piano”.
