EASY fix to remove HALOS & White Edge Fringing from LANDSCAPE photography images in Photoshop

Whit will be a new series on this channel about editing and post-processing your images. Will give out knowing that I have learned during the last 15 years and I hope it will be useful for some of you :)

In this episode the main subject is Halos or Edge fringing in images. Why does edge fringing appear and how can we get rid of it.
There are actually a lot of ways how this can happen... just to name a few:
Problems with stacking and aligning images, being to brave with the Highlight and Shadows slider in Lightroom, Camera Raw or Capture one, for example, Sky Replacement gone wrong, a real contrasty images + a lot of sharpening and one of the things mentioned above etc. So it will happen to all of us one time or another :)

Will show you some ways that I have seen people trying to fix this problem (paintbrush and clone stamp) and then will show you my way that I learned some years ago with layer blend modes + a clone stamp tool. And in the positive side its totally non-destructive workflow.

Hope this video helps you out with Halos, white edges, edge fringes!

If you have any ideas or have problems with your editing let me know and if there is enuff interest will try to make an episode out of it.

Thank you for watching.

Thank you for sharing this precious information. I have these white halos on some photos where I changed the sky and did not know what to do with the halos. I now tried it and it works fine. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for the trick with setting a blank layer to dark and then using clone stamp, I just did a pretty good job of salvaging a decent photo thanks to you!

Hi Casper, just found you and watched with much interest. Had this problem, and yes have used the clone stamp, after hours, still not happy. Well, you have made my day. I am in a local photography club, would have had a higher score in a competition if I had erased the line round a mono print. Thank you for your brilliant explanation on this. Shall be looking forward to watching more.

Wonderful tutorial Caspar! Very well explained and informative! This is probably the easiest technique I've seen for removing halos! Thank you! I look forward to seeing more of these tutorials from you. Hope you are doing well and staying safe!

Oh man, this is so brilliant - whish I had known earlier. I have wasted so many hours making imperfect halo fixes :D Thank you so much, you got a new subscriber 👍👍

Yes. Definitely the best method is clone color and paint with brush using darken blend mode. I wish you had reached this point earlier than almost ten minutes into the video. Thanks.

I had this issue a good few months ago with an image. It’s such an annoying thing to happen. But this video fixes it perfectly. Great explanation.

Seeing Iceland and Tenerife makes me want to travel again Caspar !! I’m not so good in LR and PS so these are really useful for me and I’ve definitely learned something new today so thank you 🙏🏻

Casper you saved my life. Now if you could do a tutorial on how to avoid these fringes in the first place. Maybe you already did, I'll go check. If not, it would be much appreciated.

Terrific tutorial and Thank you Caspar. Thought the description of how these halos get introduced into the image and of course the explanation of how to fix them was very well explained. I use LR and get these halos (now I know why) and fixed them with Affinity Photo using the exact method you described. Great result.

Just choose the AUTOMASK option and brush a subtraction along the halo. Zaps it quickly in Lightroom w/o having to go to Photoshop or make tiny mask corrections.

It will work for very limited number of subjects, if the subject (a very dark mountain, almost black like in your example ) is darker than the sky but if it is not, then the subject is effected too. thank you for sharing...

Excellent technique for removing the pesky halos.

How are you cloning from an empty layer? I can't do that at all... you don't have nothing to sample of.

It does not work. You can still see repaired areas where you cloned. It will look bad in print.
