300 Blackout VS. 30-30

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years, I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, become an integral part of our ecosystem, and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see and survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish, or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Even if I did drop that deer at 300 that's a long damn walk to go get it

300 blackout is quite the sleeper and can fill a lot of rolls. Wish it was .50 cents a round and more abundant.

My dad has been watching Ron Spomer context for literally decades.
Kinda emotional watching the same content the same age my dad was. Great content, you’ll keep impacting generations for years to come.

So true! I reload and because of that I have wider options than those who dont or cant reload. I absolutely fell in love with my browning blr when i got it i couldnt believe, it would shoot 0.5moa with most of the convienience of an old school lever action while being modernized magazine with spire point bullets. 30-30 brass and 300bo brass is super expensive in Australia vs 308 brass so what i did was replace my 30-30 win m94 with a blr in 308 and created a 308 load to 30-30 velocities but with all the versatility of tonnes of different 30 cal bullets.

Barnes 120gr Tac-X bullet ( G1 B.C. of .358 and has minimum velocity threshold of 1350fps for proper expansion) in the 300 blackout with a full charge of Win296 behind it is producing 2350fps. Zeroed @ 25 yards it drops 2.5” at a velocity of 1908 fps and retains 970 ft lbs of energy. So any whitetail within 200 yards is in trouble.

I run a .300 blk ar platform for deer. I run it with a Nikon p.223 scope and it’s a tack driver.

So if 300 blackout is relative to replacing the 30-30 then wouldn’t 7.62x39 be a good contender also? It’s typically cheaper also

I still like the 30-30 especially with levolution ammo.

150 grains is probably going more like 1850 fps max

I want to see the 350 legend against the blackout or 3030.
Thanks so much. Great videos..

So 300BO in a lever action let's go!

Interesting points, Sir. You can meet or exceed the 300 with the 30-30 in a bolt gun with spitzer bullets.
I prefer the 170gr bullet in 30-30. On paper the 150 has more energy, but 170 just puts them down. I ignore all the data past 100 yards. All my deer are at 50-75 yards.
But if you like 300Black out. Go for it.

Fox out.

I'd be curious to see you review the .300 HAM'R (vs these two and the 7.62x39)

This tells me it's all in the bullet SHAPE, flat nose versus point.

What would you recommend for deer & hogs for 100yards & in. 300BO, 350 Legend, 450 BM

Honestly a bolt action and threaded 300BO is the rifle I’ll buy for my kids for their first hunting rifle. Low recoil and we have a suppressor so they won’t have to use ear pro or worry about ringing ears. It’s a fantastic cartridge.

30/30 is still a better for hunting over 300BO

Here's something interesting, bullet manufacturers still make lighter .30 caliber bullets that'll expand at lower velocities. Back in the 1970s Steve Herrett & Bob Milek invented the .30 Herrett on a highly modified 30-30 casing which prompted bullet makers to make lighter bullets suitable to expand on deer at the lower velocities of that cartridge.
